My first two bettas that I owned (Dave and Jay) lived to the very very old ages of 5 and 6 years old. I'm 100% sure they died of old age. Sadly this is one of the only pictures I do have of them

My clowntail betta, I named him Duke. I "rescued" him from a pet store chain. All of their fish had died due to someone putting liquid nickel(I think?) in their system, whoever did it had also killed the bettas in their cups, the guy was just getting the whole shelf and about to throw them out when I saw him move. He was sickly from the day I got him, but he lived for a year and eventually died of columnaris.

My crowntail betta, I named him Willie Nelson, he also passed away from columnaris a bad case of cross contamination when I had attempted to give them a divided ten gallon.

Here's their ten gallon before they got sick.

[King Pretty Pretty Bacon and Eggs, Eaquire] was this fish's name, he was so pretty that I felt the need to over-name him. I moved two hours north shortly after I got him, sadly he passed away from a very aggressive case of dropsy.

I cleaned my betta tank well and waited for two months before thinking of getting another betta (I lost Duke, Willie Nelson, and [King PrettyPretty Bacon and Eggs, Esquire] within three weeks of eachother, so I was also very discouraged. But having to leave my goldfish tank home, I got an itching for water. I NEED fish around me, so yesterday I pulled out the tank and after visiting several places got my koolaid female betta Miss Drank.

Thank you!! I was so discouraged.. I went through columnaris taking two of my betta and one goldfish due to cross contamination (I didn't wash under my fingernails!) and then my third betta I lost to dropsy the day I moved. I also rehomed my Japanese Shubunkin goldfish (Edgar) back in July, so I felt anti-fish. But now I have four happy goldfish and a very happy lil betta.

Sorry to hear about all your losses, shame as they were all gorgeous fish!!

And did they really live to 5 years? Fascinating!! I thought they could only live for 2.

And male or female, that Betta is STUNNING.

All of them lovely fish.
I too know what it's like to feel discouraged though, but you just can't help but want more bettas eventually :)
