Tbh I'd take what a Lfs tell you, especially a chain with a pinch of salt.
Yes the markings were unusual but it was a platy & they can throw up unusual markings all the time

Most platies and swordtails in the trade are already hybrids, so I wouldn't worry yourself on that score.

It's an odd thing, but female platies prefer males with swords, even though males of their own species don't have them!

It's thought that, for some unknown reason, the female ancestors of both species evolved a preferance for swords on tails, and the male swordtail was then 'bred' (not conciously, of course!)by the females to have swords, by choosing the males with the longest swords to mare with

The male platies never developed the mutation that gave them a sword, so they are without one, but the female platies stilll have that preference hidden away in their genes.

You can even make males more attractive to females by artifically lengthening the sword!

Oh really? I didn't know that. Thanks for that info. The females defo have good taste then and I thought my males were gay! It's the females being picky!
Well lets hope for some sword babies! I think he's been round them all but that yellow spotted platy is his favourite. She will follow him everywhere. I think it's love lol. I have noticed though her belly getting awfully round so I think she was at the start of her pregnancy when I got her and now a red gravid spot has appeared.
That male swordtail was the only one there but there were white ones I wanted but I couldn't tell if they were male or female and they looked like they had very tiny dorsal fins I think they were very young.
Oh my, that's 2 females going to hopefully drop this week and that female will probably be a few weeks from now but then again I have my male fighter, and 7 platies. I don't think I will have any survivors.
Also my mini water lettuce came this morning and it looks awesome

I hope it provides some hiding places. I'd like to save 1 or 2 at least.
