Well this morning, my huge black female platy died. The poor thing had been stuck between the slate and the pebbles, belly up for god knows how long until I noticed her and freed her. She went behind the plants and stayed there. I kept waking up last night and checking on her and she hadn't moved. This morning she didn't even come out for breakfast and an hour or so later she had passed away
I went back to dobbies and they were really sympathetic and offered me a replacement since I got her from them. I was wandering about in self pity looking through their livebearer tanks, trying to find one that looked like her but no luck
They have a lot of tanks (9/10) with different types of guppies and a few tanks (5/6) with different coloured platy and a tank of hi fins. In one of the "assorted platy" tanks I spotted a gorgeous female I wanted as a replacement.
Here she is
yes she's a lyretail! I have never ever seen one in the flesh before I had to have her. They told me they just order assorted platies and she came in and it's the first time they have had one in years. They thought she would be snapped up quickly and they were right!
She is so small and slight compared to my other females and her fins are ragged and nipped hopefully she will recover with me.
Here is the male
Again the only one like that so I got him too. He thinks he is some sort of cassanova - he's tried it with all my females
I actually didn't give my male fighter a thought before I snapped the 2 of them up but he followed the lyretail and I thought oh no this is it but then just stopped and went a different way. I was so relieved, he's never been aggressive to any of my fish apart from a cory who sat on "his" anubias lol.
The 2 of them are swimming about quite happily and exploring everything and nibbling the plants
I couldn't get the male I had reserved as they told me he is an "american livebearer" which would explain the odd patterns. They said if I wanted to research it and come back and take him then I could. I will have a think about it-I don't know if there's any difference to be honest but I will look them up and then decide.
Thanks
