Well, i had not really thought about getting my own fishtank before, mainly because i dont have the space in my tiny room for one....or least i didnt think i did.
I was given an Aqua-65 complete with heater and filter as a gift from my girlfriend after she upgraded to a bigger tank. She was going to give it away to a friend after she failed to sell it, however i am very glad i took it off her hands because it has very quickly become my obsession, although she has already become annoyed because i wont shut up about the damn thing.
We have had tropical fish tanks in the far distant past, although i had no presonal involvement in the maintenance, however after reading the forum for the past few days and listening to my father ramble on, it became apparent that he was doing most things wrong, although his fish did not appear to suffer in the long term, i have no doubt they would had suffered short term.
So far, i have the following:
- Aqua-65 litre bowed front Fishtank
- Atinan 883 Powerhead filter system
- Elite Heater (26º Currently)
- TetraTec Air Pump with Air Wall (50 - 100 Litres)
- Cured Log for decoration
- White Gravel and some polished stones
- Rocks collected locally from a local freshwater river, cleaned with tonic salt water and boiled, tested with white vinegar to see if they fizz, all seems ok)
- API Freshwater Master Test Kit
- Tetrafin Watersafe
- Variety of live plants
- Interpet Flora Boost
So far i have had the tank for approx 1 week, i have already built the tank up and, aquascaped it, tested the PH levels of the tap water and added Watersafe. All seemed ok to start the cycle process.
Added the recommended amount of Ammonia as per the Fishless Cycle Article to 5ppm, however while i was in Maidenhead Aquatics today i noticed they had some Bactinettes for £5 per 100 litre dose. This apparently allowed me to more or less instant cycle my tank ready for fish. Bonus !!
Added Bactinette to the filter, will test the Ammonia level later tonight and first thing tomorrow morning and with any luck the readings should show as 0, however will wait and see.
If all goes well, i should be ready for fish in the next few days so am looking for advice. I would like some of your average community fish, but would also like something a little more unique, like crabs of frogs, can anyone recommended anything that will not wreak havoc on my newly planted plants and the harmony of other fish?
Look forward to your comments and advice.
