Previously I was housing my betta and his three tetra tank mates in a 14 litre plastic tank. Not much room, although he seemed happy enough. Tetras were getting very nippy with each other and had started bullying each other (although they have always behaved very well with Oz). Was waiting for my 110 litre to cycle before I moved the tetras and kept Oz on his own in the 14 litre but I 'accidentally' ended up buying a new 60 litre today!
Using my mature filter, loads of filter gunk from the lfs, some bottled bacteria and mature water/plants, I've moved the whole set up across to the new tank. I'm prepared for water changes and I'll be watching the ammonia like a hawk, but the poor tetras really did need some more space ASAP. Hopefully I'll be able to boost the shoal size and get some more tank mates for the team.
I was also in another lfs today and saw bettas kept in the tiniest jars I could imagine! Some were just lying on the bottom, not moving unless scared by idiotic children tapping the plastic. They all looked ragged and stressed. Some very, very pretty boys there that I just wanted to take home! Because the tank is 60 litres, I could split it in to two compartments, and have Oz and his tetra team in the bigger bit (about 40 litres) and another betta in the remaining 20 litres. Or I could put Oz in the 20 litres and be less restricted on tank mates for the 40 litres. Or I could keep them all together (without a second betta, obviously!) if they continue to get along.
This is Oz (Osiris):

The new 60 litre (really washed out lighting in the room due to dull day + loads of windows. Will look better when it gets dark). You can see Oz at the back:
