Thanks hun
got my tank bred from a local private dealer as the ones in the shops were fully grown and not nearlly as colourful - so looking at breeding them myself when they get bigger

thank both :D
i just wish i could get them out and give them a huggle

nice fish, just beware that they are sensitive fish nitrates above 20ppm arent really acceptable, and 28oC is needed for their health or they will deteriorate rapidly. at lower temps they face hexamita, and slowing of the metabolism

they are tank bred and have been kept at 24-26 degrees since they were born they are now approx 1 1/2 to 2 " long (lwas told about 5-6 months old)so been keeping them at that temp , thats the temp of the tank as i dont have heaters in it
i thought hexamita (hole in the head) was a parasite we had it in my grandads pond (koi carp) and treated them with crushed metronidazole tablets mixed with their food .

rams are producing pathogens inside them all the time, the immune system keeps them in check, if the immune system slows or deteriorates (very common if kept below 28oC) the pathogens produced can take hold of the fish and kill it. this is why these fish rarely survive white spot. and the higher temps will prevent this too. no heaters!? with rams?! not the best combo, i would get them on, any fluctuations will have them left weak and sometimes dead.

Hey Truck,

Does the 20 ppm apply to nitrates supplied through fertilization?

Thanks for the tip about the temp. I'll keep that in mind when I can find some of these gold rams.

They are pretty.

Thanks.

Greg

my nitrates are mostly 0
only 10 for 36 hours or so after a water change

the tank cant have a heater now as i have no more plugs - hopefully they should be ok as they have beeen at that temp since birth
