I recently introduced a pleco (i think it's a common one) into my tank so my betta would have a friend in his newly giant tank. I'm not sure how many gallons it is because I don't know what a gallon is in litres. But It's big compared to his tiny little bowl that was a litre (I didn't know bettas liked big space - I just got what the lady told me to).

Anyway, my darling betta starting attacking my pleco. I read on the net that bettas will attack and get over it. That's not the case here. He wont attack when i'm looking at him and telling him off - but as I turn a blind eye he quickly rushes over to my pleco and flares.

I also read that plecos get really big! My tank won't be able to keep him...unless his growth stunts

How do I know if my pleco isn't hungry? My tank is brand new and there is no algae. My betta always eats all of his food and there's no uneaten food.

Also, do plecos need air pumps? I recently got an air curtain to help the circulation in the water but I only put it on for an hour or so a day then turn it off so my betta can go do his thing and make bubble nests.

I gave my pleco so boiled lettuce incase he was hungry...but my betta ate it

HELP!!! :shout:

p.s. there's about 12 litres of water in my tank

Ok 12 litres is roughly 3 gallons which is perfect for your betta but far too small for your plec. I'd suggest taking the plec back, bettas do just fine on their own and don't get lonely as they are not a schooling fish(a fish that likes to live in a group) if you really want to add something else to the tank then an apple snail would be a good choice :good:.

Do you have a filter & heater in the tank? Do you have a test kit?

Oh and :hi: to the forum :D

I'm getting the heater real soon. If i take the pleco back...do I get my money back too (or maybe I can swap it for a snail?) I heard apple snails make water stink bad. I've already named my pelco so I feel real bad returning him =(.

I have no test kit because im dirt poor after buying his tank and tank gadgets. I also have no filter. I plan on doing water changes every week...should that be fine? Also, I use cycle in my tank too. Oh and there's sea shells in his tank. I read somewhere that having sea shells in freshwater tanks is bad, but it's okay if you change the water often. The water where I live is hard and akaline - so the sea shells wont rapidly make my water acidic...?

Hey there... :hi: to the forum :)

Okies...

Having a Plec in a small tank isn't good  He needs more room.

If you can, try to take him back where you bought him from. Hopefully they will give you a refund.

With the Beta, he will be fine by himself. He has 12 litres to swim in, so that is more than enough :)

Water changes every week are essential, as toxins build up within the water, which may promote Ammonia. Great to see you use cycle! Great stuff it is.

Give the sea shells a good rinse before adding them in the aquarium, just in case.

I hope that helps :)

2day.

Is using cycle enough? Well at least until I have money for a filter? If i do decide to get a stinky snail...do they need an air pump? Dammit...because I bought an air pump and I wont be able to use it much. Check out the pictures i posted too =)

Yes i saw the pictures... Nice Betta!

Cycle should be fine for now... Are you using a water conditioner at all by the way?

A snail should be fine... about the air pump, snails shouldn't really need one, because they go to the surface for air, and falling to the bottom to keep on moving.

LOL of course I am, I'm not a total noob. I also condition the water everytime i make partial water changes...?

I think ill forget quoting lol...

Yes, is it recommended that you condition your water everytime you perform a water change to remove chlorine.

haha - it was a long scroll down. Should i take the plastic plants out and scrub them with warm water every water change too?

If the plants have algae on it (and i mean, if its that unattractive), you can give them a clean if you want to.

For my plastic plants, i use a toothbrush (new, of course, only for the fish lol).

That's not necassary, just clean them when they get dirty :) Maybe get some real plants to help with nitrates, I'm sure your betta would appreciate them.

I think my tank is a bit too small for real plants...and what if i screw it up and all the plants die >.<" I'll have to take a picture tomorrow

Then get some java moss...

I say, that moss never dies, it replicates itself!!!

If you want a simple plant, try some java moss, and then when you feel more confident, get some nice looking ones :)

some small floating plants could be good too, they really strip ammonia out of the water which would help as you don't have a filter. and they are generally really easy to look after too, which is a bonus

What small floating plants are availible? Do I just put them in the water and the survive? I guess I'll have to leave some space on the surface for him to breathe :look:
