I did that the first time,in the main community tank,but the other fish were eating the fry. I also found that most adult female swordtails are too large,and get really stressed out when placed in a trap. Better to use a breeding net in the main tank for the fry after they've been born.

does the breeding tank work ok?

It works fine,as long as you clone the new tank with filter media from your main tank.
