My LFS have a betta in with neon tetra in a smallish display tank and they get on fine. I thought these fish wouldnt mix in small tanks or was i wrong?

No they don't mix well and i can almost gaurantee next time you go in the betta will be nipped and shredded and the neons will be in a bd way because of lack of space,

It's awful what some people do to bettas

Are neon tetras known for nipping? I was thinkin of gettin a few for one of me tanks that has pearl gouramis and wouldnt want their fins nipped

They do tend to go for bettas but i'm not sure about gouramis as i don't keep them, i know barbs are nippy so best not to have them in there.

i had 9 noens with my betta, they got on perfect so i reckon do it cause i got no probs except with the guppie he gets it confused for another betta

some neons are fine and dont nipe but alot of them do so its risky but it just dependece on the fish same as some bettas would kill the neons and anythink else in the tank but others will live with anythink

One thing to remember about fish in the store is that when they are introduced into your tank it is a different environment and territories and boundarys are set up whereas in the LFS these would not be so established. They may be fine but would you want to risk it? :)

No i wouldnt risk it at all but i got my betta today and no tetras so its fine

I'm still a newb at the hole fish keeping but one thing I have found out is the fish you get are completely different from anyone elses. I have a tetra serpa who doesn't like the other 2 he attacked one and killed him and he goes after the other guy during feedings but they haven't fought any other times so I'm not to worried with the two of them. But you just got to watch your fish and see how they act

Bettas vary greatly in character. Some are fine with all other fish, some are aggressive towards things like guppies, gouramis, angelfish and basically most things are are a comparable size. Some, very rarely, hate all other fish.

But the vast, vast majority of the time IME, neons and bettas are great together. I've put dozens of bettas in tanks full of neons with no issues at all.
