Black marks appeard on 2 of my guppy fry were the tail meets the body its not on the tip of the tail so would this mean they are male and they are getting their colour? They are 5 weeks old :good:

5 weeks sound about right for colour to start appearing, with my guppy fry the black is always the first colour to show.

Yeah when i used to breed guppies they would colour up at about that time too :)

Yes, black is the very first color to come in for my babies, some as early as 2 weeks here.

Same as me. My babies are 2 weeks old now and the biggest has an all black tail just like mum :D the others have black markings on fins and tails.

I am starting to see smaller dots on the tail now on one of the fry so this may be the colour forming :good:

I can now see a tint of yellow on some of them now. I have a yellow snakeskin guppy and i think a flame guppy and a female guppy which has a yellow tail. My snakeskin mostly chases the female so it may be the father of the fry and it may be abit difficult identifying them but if they have black marks and a yellow colour on them they are probably male and if they are yellow then female :good:

Heres another update: my guppy gave birth yesterday and i took out 2 of the fry. my other guppys are now big enough to go into the main tank but i have some questions:

1) Should i put the new birth guppies into the main tank so they get eaten because im already raising 5 right now :good:

2) can i take my bigger guppies out the hatchery because i know they wont get eaten but there may be competition for food and the food im feeding them would fly around the tank because of the filter and they wont get it :good:

1. Yes, probably. With the best will in the world, no-one can raise all their guppy fry; they just ahve too many. Better to concentrate on rearing a few youngsters well than lots and lots badly because you don't have room :good:

2. Switch the filter off for five or ten minutes while you feed them. Set the alarm on your phone so you don't forget to turn it back on again ;)

Just have to let nature do its work then :( but that is a good idea switching off the filter :good: my bigger fish do catch the guppies but swim away after probably so it looks at it to see if its small enough to eat it
