Every time I feed an algae wafer my gourami looks like he ate a watermelon, even though I break it up so other fish can get some. Is this something that happens often? I think specifically he's competing with my female betta she is the second fattest looking after wafers...

A lot of people will say that fish are like dogs. They'll eat and eat till they go pop. You just need to work out a system where all fish get feeding.

My gourami will eat everything in the tank. Everything. She'll even try to eat the micro pellets sitting on the substrate by swimming by it so that it gets knocked up into her mouth. I only put in half a wafer knowing she'll eat the whole thing. I don't really feed the wafers so much anymore. I tend to overfeed so everyone gets a little something and my gourami is busy chasing flakes around.

You have a gourami with a betta? I'd separate. Gourami's and betta's don't mix very well. I also have to ask, since you say you have a female betta, you don't have a male betta too right? :/

one female betta, one male dwarf gourami, they seem to be fine together, (guppies make up a majority of the tank) lots of hidey holes and plants as well.  And yeah I don't feed wafers all the time either usually in the mornings I feed flakes or freeze dried shirmp, I change it up.  And at night (not every night)  I will either throw in some peas or wafers because that's when the snails are active most, only fatty fish usually beats them to it.  Maybe I'll just soften them up a bit before putting them in so they break up better in the water.

Freeze Dried is like feeding them cardboard, that's why I don't use it for mine. Frozen is better. Also, how long have you had the tank set up? They'll be fine for months and then one day one of the will snap. It's also advisable not to keep guppies with gourami's and betta's either after they are colourful and long finned. How big is the tank?

I've had my tank since january, it's 20 gallons, and yeah freeze dried isn't the funnest, once it's gone I'll get something else, for what it's worth, they gobble it up like it was swimming past them. I keep a good eye on my tank as I'm home most of the time, so rest assured if one of them becomes a problem I'll be on it.  Both the betta and gourami ignore the smaller fish, mostly I see them pick at a snail now and then.

I actually have less of a problem with the fish and more of a problem with the cats swatting at them (from outside) or the kids pressing their faces on the tank (despite my telling them not to...kids)

To the red: Can totally agree here XD I have a sister and 2 brothers and they do this too. And the cats sit and bat the water XD

To the rest: Glad you're able to keep an eye on them :)

When you figure out how to keep that cats from attacking the tank and the kids from pressing their faces....let me know your secret!

I sprayed my cat with water everytime he went for the fish. He doesn't anymore! Lol. If you feed the fish some on the left and some on the right than the gouramis should have difficulty being in 2 places at once.
