My Poor Oscar I am a killer. :( I fed him about four hours ago and he ate like normal, he swam around and stared at me and seemed perfectly fine. He was only about three years old still a baby just a pinch under a foot long. The last fishie death I had that wasnt a feeder fish, or a pond fish eaten by coons, was over three years ago and it was a five year old danio with a kinked back. I feel rotten :-(

To top it off I am a hipocrit I just lectured a local reastuarant owner for the poor condition he had his oscars in. They had horrible hole in head, but at least his are alive.

Awww that sucks, what happened to it?

it is possible that a bit of food got stuck in its throat or it had a heart attack or something? There are alsorts of hidden problems with fish that will lead to death very easily. Kidney problems are very common because of fish inbreeding leading to bad quality fish they tend to have deformed internal organs, the kidneys being one of the most suceptable. This can lead to problems later in life.

Have you recently added anything to your tank or done anything out of the ordinary? Don't beat yourself up for the oscar dying, you didnt directly kill it and havent done anything to harm it so dont feel badly.

I havent done anything out of the ordinary. Nothing added or removed, I am due for my weekly water change in two days. The Pleco had already found and sucked his one side but otherwise he looks fine. He is my first large fish death. I have kept fish for about 15 years now. In the tank I have my Pleco, and cory cats which I have had since 1999. I really hope it was just some freak thing. All my water params are fine.

Hi smooth_bourbon,

I'm so sorry to read about your oscar. :rip:

It's not uncommon for a fish to die of unknown causes, but I can see where it would be much harder to have a loss when you have a few big fish, rather than many small ones. Please don't be discouraged about this.

There is another fish out there somewhere who needs your wonderful care and attention. The sooner you find it, the happier he will be.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that! As attached as I've grown to my oscar, I couldn't imagine losing him :rip:

Too bad you don't live in MN, me and OA visit this show and it has 3 large(9+ inches) in one seemingly small 30G. They are almost full grown, and All have large patches of brown. They're in need of dire care.
If only I was a rich boy, I could just buy a basic 55G w/ no gravel, just a filter and a heater..... Makes me sad knowing I can do nothing. I'm sure they'll be long gone by the time I can do something...

Thank you everyone for reading and your nice replys. I did an early water change today and all my other fish seem perfectly healthy still. My Jack Dempsey is going wild with his new freedom to roam the tank at his will.
