So I went to bed at around 1 a.m. and slept for about an hour before I heard this huge splash. I got up and turned on all of the tank lights making sure no one had jumped out because that is what it sounded like hehe. So I turn the lights out after finding no escape-artists and climbed back into bed. I wake up AGAIN to a huge splash! It sounded like I had like an oscar swimming around in my tank when all I have is tiny community fish. So I freak out and search the room again, find nothing.

Then I hear a splash along with a kind of bang. I freaked out thinking my 120 gallon had cracked. So I am freaking out and checking for fish and leaks in the tank. I look up and see my sailfin plec pushing around the driftwood all around my tank. I wedged it into a corner of my tank so it would sink down. I guess he had uprooted it and was pushing it all over the tank! I couldn't believe it. He was darting around the tank everywhere having the time of his life with that good old piece of wood. I was relieved that it wasn't a fish that jumped out nor a crack in the tank, just a silly pleco entertaining himself.

How big is your Pleco?

Be careful, he may exert enough force pushing the log to crack your tank in the future. If it hits in the right place, all hell will break loose.

He is almost 5 inches right now. Yea. I will have to anchor the log down somehow so he can't push it around the tank. That little trouble-maker. Why do I even have him in my tank? He'll get HUGE, he is a poop machine, and I don't even have algae in my tank. I guess it is because I love him and he is such a great fish.

Lol! Perhaps you should replace it with a rock.

I know, plecs are just so cute! They're so cool. So much attitude. Better do something about him, or he may cause you loads of money, not to mention heartache.

Well I am thinking of tying a suction cup to the end of the log and anchoring it to the bottom of the tank. I don't think I could take his wood away, he clings onto it all day long. :p

That'll work too. Get strong suction cups! Some of them will lose suction in water. Or you can take a rock, drill a hole and using ultra fine fishing line, tie the log to it, but wouldn't look really nice unless you can position it to make sorta a cavern or something, with the log resting on the rock.

Thanks for the ideas. I have some huge suction cups I bought at a craft store a little bit ago.

My plec likes to plant himself on driftwood too. Be has another quirky habit. He swims up and down in circles, on the wall of the tank...

heh, i used to keep mine in very shallow aquarium before moving him the the 2' deep. apparently, he could latch on the wall of the old one then just prop up on his tail.

the reason i say this is that every so often, you can look over and see him slowly slide down an inch or two, then scoot back up the wall. then he relaxes and starts slowly sliding down again... he'll repeat the process for 30 minutes or so before he gives up and goes back to his log.

 that made me laugh.

That's funny! Why do plecs like to move things around when we are trying to sleep? I have a plec in a 55. Late one night, I hear this tapping, sounds like someone tapping on the glass block window above the tank. I go in the fish room to look at the window, no one is there.

5 minuites later, tapping at the window. I go look, again, no one there, so I go outside & look. No one there. I figure someone is pulling a prank, so I go sit in the fishroom.

A few minuites later, the plec starts wacking the side of the tank with the floating thermometer, tap tap tap. Wise guy!

That is cute! But probably annoying, too.. and to think some people say fish don't have personalities!

Well tonight he has seemed to leave the piece of wood alone. Now he just swims across the top of the water REALLY fast with his sailfin sticking out of the water like a shark. It makes an incredibly loud splashing noise and I freak out everytime and get up and check the floor to see if one of my fish have jumped out. He sure knows how to freak me out and get his attention. :p

I think fish enjoy scaring us

Glad it was just your pleco having fun with a piece of wood
