I noticed this yesterday and thought it was just some food on his head and even commented on his 'little hat' but now it hasn't gone away and didn't fall off when I caught him. He is an oto fish in case you haven't noticed. Please help? I don't want to put him back in until I know it isn't contagious to my other fish or anything. I didn't even touch him because I don't know what it is. He is being isolated in a Philadelphia cup right now until I can put him in a fish bowl or something.

It hard to see much in the pic.

Has he been in a squabble with another fish.
Is the lump, or bump beneath the skin or on top.
What colour is the lump.
Does the lump look hard in appearance and texture. Or soft filled with fluid.
Any redness to the lump.
Any strands coming out of the lump.
Does the lump resemble a cauliflower in appearance.
Has the lump just suddenly appeared.
Does the lump look smooth.
Is the lump ulcerating.

Sorry, it was hard to take a picture.

I doubt he has been in a squabble with another fish.
It appears to be on top of the skin.
The lump is a brown/tan colour.
It looks soft and it has a litle red.. Looks like a vein on one side of it.
There are no strands on the lump.
It looks like there are three little lumps stuck together actually.
Yes in a way it does look like a cauliflower.
Yes it seems to have just appeared.
The lump looks smooth, yes
I don't know what that means..

The small lumps do they look like a cluster of berries.
Just make sure in not lymthocystis.

Do you have a hospital tank. As it would be better to isolate him incase it bursts.
I would use an internal bacteria med.

Lymphocystis

Symptoms:

Fish infected with Lymphocystis will present with clusters of whitish, berry-like growths on the skin and fins. These "clusters" may resemble small clutches of eggs or cauliflower (hence, it is sometimes called Cauliflower Disease). They will be clearly visible and may even become extremely large. This disease often affects the fins first.

Cause:

Viral infection. The virus will eventually kill the fish if it is unable to mount a strong enough immune response as the virus rampages through the fishs tissues, destroying its cells.

Treatment:

As with all viral infections, there is no suitable cure or efficacious treatment; however Quick Cure claims to be helpful. I have also heard of people who trim the fish's fins, followed by several baths in Malachite Green. Fortunately, this disease is uncommon and in some cases, infected fish are able to recover quickly without treatment.

Lymphocystis is highly infectious. When infected cells from the fishs skin or fins burst the virus is spread throughout the aquarium and can remain contagious for periods of up to two months. Fish not showing symptoms should be removed from the aquarium and placed in quarantine, away from other fish, for at least 60 days. Note, remove uninfected fish, not the other way around because the aquarium has become contaminated. The infected aquarium should be emptied and thoroughly disinfected before returning any fish to it. Do not use soap to clean the aquarium.

I don't have a hospital tank, cause I didn't know you needed one until now.

It doesn't really look like a cluster of berries no. More like cauliflower. He doesn't move much when he is in the tank so I'm sure he would be fine.

I have another oto too which Is why I want to make sure it isn't contagious

For now I would take the bacterial route.
Lymthocystis can also come in colours of brown, red, white.

Just keep a close eye on the growth.
You will have to medicate the whole tank if you can't isolate him.

It's best to have a hospital tank as you can move sick fish.
Also doubles up as a quarantine tank for new fish.

Maracyn.
A good med.
But it will knock your beneficial bacteria in the filter.
