My Fish Are Dying...don't Know Why?

Yes your're right about them being dangerous....Unfortunately, that one with the fin damage was dead this morning....I guess he just couldn't keep up. I hope those bullies are happy now.

The rest of the tank is very peaceful this morning.

Disgusted about it though....

oh i am sorry to hear that lazerus :rip:

glad that the tank has settled this morning though, hopefully it'll be peace and quiet from now on.

Yea...I'm just not sure though....I don't feel they are happy in there... I don't want them to get too stressed & end up getting ill.

I think I might move them to the main tank sooner than normal or I might move the two gourami or something. I don't know.

Edited to say...those Gourami REALLY like each other!? Would they be 'at it' that fast though...under such stressful conditions? I'm still convinced they are fighting...although, its very graceful.

considering the gourami's are more disease prone i would suggest that they should definately stay in quarantine if possible, so if you decide to move anyone then move some or all of the cardinals to the main tank.

so are there any hostilities still this morning or have they all calmed down?

it is quite normal for fish to behave out of their normal character in the first day or so in a new tank, if things have settled this morning then i would leave it as is for a day or two to monitor how things have gone.

if you bear in mind that this behviour is most likely a reaction to the disruption then if you disrupt them again by moving them today there's a good chance the same behaviours will flare up again, yes with a larger tank and less fish in it they've all got a bit more room to get away from each other but it won't necessarily make a difference.

Fair enough...rignt so...I'll leave it be for today!

Yes, things are definately more peaceful, without a doubt.

Thanks!

give us an update at the end of the day or tomorrow morning and we'll double check the sanity of the decision, but if it was my tank i'd leave them be for today at least.

Tut! Another one dead this morning....really fed up about this.

Only 4 cardinals left now...my water stats are totally fine, so I guess they were either just weakened from the stress or fighting or whatever. Really fed up about it though. :/

Plus, at a fiver a fish, I'm hoping I'll not loose any more of these guys!

yeah thats a lot of cash for a cardinal tetra!

sorry you've lost another one, are they still fighting or being peaceful?

Cardinals at work were up at £8.25 each for a short while... Supplier shortages coupled with a high exchange rate lead to a realy high price per fish... The prices have since recovered to a more reasonable £3.75 each ish.... Still more than before mind...

The death would most certailnly be down to fighting. Cutting QT is a last resort scenario IMO, as doing so is asking for trouble in the main tank :/ Cardinals do have teeth. If they grew to the size of Salmon, they'd have 6-8" long teeth on them, and that's just scary

All the best
Rabbut

I just paid 1.85 each for mine (tank bred, don't know if you are talking 'wild' prices?), well slightly less actually as it was 4 for £7. Ok I know there was delivery on that too, but I was getting a fair amount of stuff so the delivery cost was 'spread out' a bit :)

Yea... I should clarify that its €5 not £5 as I live in Ireland....and as we all know, its rip of Ireland big time as always. :<

The shop I went to is a very reputable shop...and they are one of the sponsers of the Irish Tropical Fish Society....I travelled miles to get there...and I almost feel like ringing them about this. But sure, what comback do I have?

They were selling them as 'XL' fish, and clearly felt justified in inflating the price to match. They also had them in a tank that magnified the size of them, making them appear bigger than they actually were.

I normally pay €3 per Cardinal however, these ones I will agree were more stronger, fatter looking fish...unlike ones I've seen in the past, so I kind of briefly hesitated and then went with it anyway. So €30 lighter I went home with 6 little guys. (Not adding the Fire Honey Gouramis which were €5.95 a piece too!)

....but when I got these guys home, they were no bigger than my other cardinals...so I felt really ripped off then.

And now to loose two...Ah jassis! ( ...as they say here in Ireland! )

Anyway, tank is definately more peaceful....the cardinals are just hanging around in their own various spots...the gouramis are up and down, in and out, and seem happy enough.

if everythings settled down now then definately leave them all in quarantine, the loss will have def been from teh fighting yesterday.

i know it can be heartbreaking but it's just one of the realities of fishkeeping, it goes that way sometimes.

I dropped the shop an email about it anyway, just to let them know and ask they can offer any advice or whatever...sure its no harm...and for all I know, maybe loads of their Cardinals are floating around their tank this morning??? (Doubt it though -_- )

I also spoke to a another guy who bought some of the same stock over the weekend, and his are all intact...I guess I was just unlucky!

Thanks for all the advice though...maybe I would have lost more, had I not added the extra plants etc.

Anyway, yes, indeed, this is the ups and downs of fish keeping alright....not to worry.

As I said in my first post...never a dull moment!

I'm sorry to say, I lost another Cardinal this morning...couldn't believe it.

After contacting the lad in the shop I got the fish in, he told me that their fish are tank bred but are used to a water with a pH of 7.

Mine water is pH7.8, so its possible that this is whats getting them. :(

I'm really fed up about it, and this truly is the end of my adventure with Cardinal tetras....no more. That's it now.

I've wasted too time, energy and money on them between traveling to various places miles away, having countless fish die on me or get ill, buying various medications to save them etc...and then the heartache of loosing them. Its just not conducive to a happy, stress free life!!

I guess with a pH so high always, I'll have to really research fish that are compatible with this pH. Especially now that I'm setting up my new tank.
