here is my first tank and it is a lot bigger than i wanted really lol. i am a bit worried about the weight on the desks that it is on and am not sure if they will hold. i have stood on them all and they where solid so i think i will just slowly fill the tank when the time comes and keep an eye on how the the desks are coping :)
i also got a Fluval 4plus with it which i assume is okay as it is quite big. tank size is L=120cm W=40cm H=40cm does anyone have an idea of how much it will weigh when full?
cheers

Well you work out the volume in litres- and it is the same in kilograms.
I calculated that it's 192 litres, so 192 kg.
I think this is right- someone please tell me if I am incorrect!

Just for future reference at the top of the page middle to right there are some tabs one has calculator if you click it you will find some helpful calculators. placing your dimensions in it will show you that you have a 192 litre tank that will way 192 kilos BUT!

thats if you fill your tank to the absolute brim something I would not recommend. When taking into calculating the total weight you must remember to not just calculate the water but also the weight of the glass tank itself the substrate (sand or gravel usually) the other items like ornaments are negligible unless you add lots of medium or large rocks or lots of wood.

hope this helps

It looks like a great tank what are your plans any ideas for stocking?

Regards onebto

Those desks should hold but be careful with the tank over those uneven gaps between them!

thanks for the help. i have decided to spend some money and buy it a proper stand. the tank itself only cost me 2 quad bike tyres lol. as for stocking i am a fan of the smaller fish i think they are called tetra's and minow's. i think i will go tropical with it so that the choice of fish is a bit bigger (i love the look of the bala sharks, my lfs has a few in :hyper:  would the bala sharks be suitable with the tetra's and other small fish, i need to do some research first to find some fish i like, trying to go with a small scale so the tank looks bigger if you know what i mean :)

Tetras rule!!! :hyper:

Nice tank! where you get it?? jealous.. oh so jealous..

Bala's will get waaaaay too big for it so stay away from them.

Tetra wise, I have a group of rummy noses for sale (8 to be exact) :hey: Lovely looking fish and they swim as a bunch constantly, only selling as I'm getting some bigger cihclids that would eat them.

Some dwarf cichlids would go nicely in there too :good:

haha i got it off a mate, traded for 2 quad tyres :D

ahh fair enough, i will just start off with the little tetra's then. first i need to buy a decent tank heater  will be a few weeks untill it has some fish in it. cant wait :shout:

I had the same filter. If I were you, once stocking up if you have a lot of fish get a decent external filter.

Tank looks great, nice and long!

I would disagree about the filter. I have used the 3+ and 4+ and both work very well. An external would be good but I think they work fine.

I would suggest cardinal tetras.

right, stocking i am thinking a school of minnow's and a school of tetra (not sure on type yet) and also some cherry shrimp. can some one tell me if all these are compatible? my lfs also has a crayfish type looking thing that is in with the minnows, which may interest me if all goes well. i need to find out if all the fish are okay together and to start cycling my tank! should have the stand in a few days :hyper: :shifty:

would a Red Tailed Shark be suitable with the tetra, minnows and shrimp?
cheers, james.

bit of an update  need to buy some new media for the filter before i fill with water but i have added a back ground, a proper stand and the gravel/sand and looks good :D i plan to buy some slate to cover most of the sand and gravel, some real plants and some silk, no heater so it will be a 'cold water' so far plan minnows and lots of shrimp! anyway this is what it looks like up to now
