Went to Pets at home today, saw (what used to be a) beautiful male in a tank, with no fins, and just laying on the bottom of the tank hardly breathing.

I had to stand there for 15 minutes before someone would serve me, she apologised and said that they were understaffed.

I showed her the betta and told him he needed to be moved, the other fish were really nipping at him, then she said she had no where to put him as they had 'nasty' fish in their hospital tank... what aload of rubbish.

I then asked her if she could move him somewhere away from the fish that were nipping him, she then said that she could move him into another tank, but would be next to another fighter and 'they had done that before and the fighters had worn themselves out' ... i was getting really angry!!!!

Then she just put him in the net in the tank he was already in, and said there was nothing else she could do. I felt gutted because i know that he's not going to make it through the night. I wish i coudl have taken him home with me but he had no where to live :(

I spoke up, but they didnt to anything to save him apart from putting him in a net :-(

I'm sorry to hear about the Betta. If he's still alive and in there, maybe you could suggest they put him in one of those little bowls? It's better than staying in that tank.

How do they keep their bettas?
Not in little cups? They should have had some little cups around to put him in.
He'd have at least been better off in a little bitty cup than where he was.

:grr: Store like that make me mad.
Where was this store?
What city?

I suggested a cup, but she said they dont have them..... just one hospital tank that already had fish in. I then said 'well he has to be moved' and she was look at all the tanks with tetras .... i was like NOT WITH THE TETRAS.

She said there was no where for him and he would probably die!

First of all i thought, well he must have been there for some time, so surely if they are checking on the tanks they would have noticed days ago that he was being picked on etc

Momma - they are kept in 5/10 gallon tanks with other fish. When i bought my betta he was in a tank full of silver sharks.

My only other suggestions are either to buy him and put him in a cup you have at home, until you can do something better for him, or suggest that the store euthanizes the fish.

Wow - that store has no business selling bettas if they can't even keep them in containers on their own.

Where is Cwmbran ?

I suggested she euthanised him, she just put him in the net and that was it.

I couldnt of taken him home, i live in wales in a large house and the temperature here fluctuates all the time :(

I am tempted to go back tomorrow to check on him, if he is still there i might just buy him and buy him a tank of his own, a heater and a a few bits. But it would have to go on the credit card, and i would have to persuade my boyfriend....

I do want another betta, perhaps buying him as he is on the edge, and seeing if i can save him ... i would have a friend for life then :)

seriously thinking about writing to them, perhaos you could help me draft up a letter as id like to show i know my stuff, they could turn around and say i dont know what i was talking about :(

Well, I just tried giving them a call.
It must be nighttime over there? They were closed - or at least no one answered and I let it ring several times.
i'm in the U.S. - you are in the U.K.... it's almost 3:00 in the afternoon here right now - is it... hmm, about 9 pm there?

Maybe I'll give them a call tomorrow.
Also, I would be happy to help you draft a letter.
maybe you could put one together, and post it here and get input from several people on it?

UK...like not America...like England, London...you know, the UK.

BettaMomma, you need to just start a Betta Rescue...a fromal one, with a licence, state/donation funded, with pamplets on where to drop off fish. Seriously, it seems to be your calling.

Are there laws for fishkeeping in the UK?

All you american's talk about the fish being in 'cups' i have never seen a fish in one of those small cups over here in the uk

I've looked into starting up a guinea pig rescue.
I just didn't have the space for it so I shelved that idea.
I've been thinking about the betta rescue though...
not a bad idea. ;)
