My First Fry

woke up this morning to find 2 baby platys i new my fish were pregnant? but not sure when they will be born. anyway had to rush to work(6.50am) so put a large round floating plant in the tank so as to give the fry a hiding place. just home at 8.00pm (long day wondering about fry). now i cant see any fry do you think mum has ate them or are they in hiding? in the tank are 3 platys and 1 sucky thing(octo?

hi, they have probably been eaten by the platies unless the tank is heavily planted. the otocinclus catfish won't eat the babies, as it is herbivorous. personally, i would get a few more of the otocinclus, as they prefer to live in groups. the fry may have survived, but if they haven't, it isn't that bad, as platies are prolific breeders, and you'll probably have more babies soon. next time,(or if you see these fry again), as soon as you see the babies, catch them with a net, and either put them in another tank on their own, or put them in a breeding trap. but i wouldn't put the parents in the trap, because it will stress them out, and they will probably not have the babies. remember to frequently change the water in the breeding trap , if you use one for the babies, so the water is always clean.

From experience platys are greedy little things and will have probably eaten them but then on the same score, fry can be excellent hiders!

Congrats on the fry,i hope you find them,they can hide really well,under and in decor/gravel/plants etc..its possible the platys could have eaten them depending if they could hide or not...
