I will be going to Cornell in a few weeks and I was very mad that I had to leave all my pets behind. But, I found out I can have an aquarium 10 gallons or smaller in my dorm room!!! I was soo excited. So, I got a betta! I am already hooked on them. They are such great little fish! I have a few questions though. First off...when I got him I kinda wasn't thinking...it's a 6 hour drive to my college...is that a feasible trip for a betta? I really love this guy and would love for him to come with me, but if it's not likely he would be able to make the drive I could always get another betta there and have Diego live at home. Another question. I am torn between a minibow 2.5 and a 5. I'm leaning toward the mini-bows as opposed to the glass 5.5 he is in now because they are plastic so are lighter and easier to transport. My question is the 2.5 would obviously be easier to place in a dorm, but in your experiences would he be happier in the 5 than in the 2.5? Or would he actually prefer the 2.5? (I think I read that some bettas are insecure in larger spaces? I could be completely wrong though so thats why I am asking :)) If you think he'd like the 5 more, I'll do whatever I can to make it fit. Or hey...I could even divide it...and have 2! Lol. So, anyways, introducing Diego!
"Grrr....I mean fishy!" :p

Many people keep their Bettas in 2.5G tanks and never have problems but I do prefer to keep them in 5G or more. As long as they have plants and somewhere to hide then they are fine in a 5G and will make use of all the swimming space.
He's certainly a pretty boy!

Bettas are very easy to get hooked on, lol! And your Diego (awsome name) is a beauty! You picked out a very nice one! I have one almost just like him, but it's a female CT. She's awsome and I'm sure he is to :good:

Thanks everyone! The lfs near me had a nice sale on the 2.5 gallon minibows, so I decided to go for that. It seems very roomy to me, so hopefully he will enjoy it! I changed the bulb in it for a flourescent one instead of incandescent (I can't spell lol) and used a sponge filter instead of the one they came with. So, here's Diego's new tank!

he really is a gorgeous betta, looks like he should be happy in his new home, i hope you can make the trip with him as it would be a shame to have to leave him at home

Hey there, I saw you mentioned something about a five hour trip to college, and since I move mine from Pennsylvania to Illinois (about 10 - 12 hours), perhaps I can offer you some advice!

First off, fast them the day before you leave to help keep the water cleaner. I had some pasta sauce jars (with lids) that I sanitized with a mild bleach and water solution. (Then, being as paranoid as I am, I rinsed it with near-boiling water about a dozen times, and allowed it to cool.) I prepared the water and filled the jar with about three inches of water (you can judge based on the size of your fish, but don't fill it all the way. He'll need the air more than the swimming space.). then I put the fish in right before I head out. I also found if you keep the jar, lid on, of course, in a small suitcase that my bettas didn't show one stress line. The darkness seems to put them into that sleepy-state for the entire journey. I checked on them from time to time (mainly because my mother was concerned that somehow they would run out of air), and they all made the trip just fine.

The only thing I would suggest when you're packing is this: betta is the last packed up, and the first unpacked!

Don't worry, hell make the trip just fine! :) :good:

Thanks everyone for the comments! And thanks so much for the advice!! I'm so happy to hear that it can be done lol. I would really hate to have to get a "replacement" for him and leave him at home.
