My first berried RCS

I’m very excited to find my first berried red cherry shrimp as a new shrimp keeper (2 mos). I thought I saw a white-ish patch developing underneath the shrimp and I’ve kept an eye on it, and sure enough they are turning into eggs, plain as day for the eye to see. I was looking to see if there was such a page online that would show the # of days as the eggs developed but I couldn’t find any such page. Maybe I will have unseen baby shrimp in the tank by the end of the month. No little black eyeballs showing yet. The tank is around 68°F. I have a shrimp cube with half the sides covered in thick Taiwan triangle moss for them to hide, plus a cholla tube, hornwort thick in a corner of the tank top to bottom, and lots of leaf litter so the babies should have places to hide. Besides shrimp, just some snails, amphipods and possibly water fleas in the tank. A few pics of the tank (today, and a few days ago) attached for viewing pleasure hahaha). One is the berried shrimp from today and the other is just a pretty red shrimp that also lives in that same tank. Currently just 9 shrimp in a 5 gallon.

Hi, thank you. Yes, that is right, no heater. No bubbler. A sponge over the intake tube.

Why no heater?

I read that shrimp didn’t need a heater and that the cooler temps they’re kept in, the longer they will live. I keep them at the low end of the recommended temps on many of the shrimp seller’s websites.

72F is the precise temperature they thrive at, but they can tolerate lower temperature. Not sure where you read they will live longer if kept at lower temperatures.

Temp right now in the tank says 72.3 F. I have a digital TDS meter which also does temps.

A member on another forum talk about how the shrimp live longer at cooler temps. I was doing a lot of research for a few months before I set up my first shrimp tank.

I found out two of my shrimp are carrying eggs. A pale one and a bright red one. I’m looking forward to the coming weeks. 😀👍

Then all is good. I wasn’t aware the temperature of the water was 72.3 without a heater. Good luck on the other pregnant shrimp!

I am so excited to announce I’ve seen my first baby shrimp in my tank. It’s very hard to see but here is a picture of it. It is on the pale white area of a dying piece of plant material. I saw a speck with a tail swimming around my tank and it landed on that piece of plant material. My eyes couldn’t focus that well on it so I used my camera phone to zoom in and try to snap a picture but it was really hard to focus on that small little spot. It is a lot smaller than the amphipods in that tank. I’m going to have to cease my morning amphipod hunts (to treat my cichlids) for the time being. There may be a constant supply of babies in my tank now and I may have to forgo amphipod hunts all together. I just figured I’d share my excitement and happiness with my fellow fish lovers.
