Hi, i was wondering as to wether my filter a marina S15 with extra filter wool in the back be able to handle 7 neon tetras , 2 gouramis & and a brissle nose plec as before I setup for tropical I had 4 shubunkins in the 60l tank 60cm x 30cm x 35cm and the filter was cycled in a month with 4 messy goldfish, our should I buy something like a fluval u1, just cause I dont really want anything else in my tank taking up space and just wondering wether the current filter will be okay? atm i only have the 7 neons is so any help would be great thanks.

Sorry don't know anything about the marina s15 but a quick google says it does up to 57l tank so more suitable then the fluval u1 which only does up to 45l which would be too small for your 60l tank.

When you say the filter cycled in a month did you check the water parameters to check this? I would say that if in fact the marina handled 4 messy fish like you had then the ones you are proposing should not be a problem. But I don't know much about them, someone else will be able to better advise.

Personally I like fluval, so if you are going to change you will need to go for the U2 for your tank and go through maturing the filter media again (I'm having to do this at the moment with a U3) Just need to run both filters along side.

yeah i had the water tested with a marina freshwater test kit with all perfect results, even the shopkeeper was shocked when he tested the water for me as the tank has only been up a month and a few days, says must have a good filter if it handled those messy thing for month and you get perfect results. and if I got a u2 our sumic I was just gonna put the media from my present filter in there as wouldent want to have to spend money buying lots of cartridges when I have 2 meters of filter wool & 500g of activated carbon spare of my previous tank. the results were ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0 & ph 7.

You have NitrAte level of zero?
yes, is that bad as when I've got water tests they said its good.

Well, the bacteria in our filter eat ammonia & nitrites & produce nitrate as waste, the only way to remove nitrates is water changes. If you have zero nitrates it means that nothing is producing them, ergo, a problem with the nitrifying bacteria.

I've been reading and Its says that having 0 nitrate is a nothing bad as all it means is I have a very clean tank as I did water changes every 2 days when I had 4 shubunkins in but now with just 7 neons I'll only be doing 10% once a week, and I also read that plants absorb them and I have plants so that could be another reason.
