Hey folks, new to the forum, thought id post up my tank with a fighter, will be adding some more fish over the next few weeks.

not so sure what to add next, maybe a silver shark and some tetras.

Beautiful boy you have ^^ And your tank looks great too :) I'd suggest adding some more plants, especially big leafy ones as betta love to sit on them :good:

You need to be really careful with betta tank mates, especially with males. They'll either beat other fish up, or other fish (such as tetra) could shred the betta's fins. Some people have been successful with having males in community tanks, so it might be worth trying to find those who have done and find out what they kept with their males.
Whats his temperament like? Laid back or does he flare at everything? If he is relaxed, then some corydora and otto's would work really nicely :)

Not sure what size your tank is, but it looks like it could be too small for a silver shark- they can apparently get up to an adult size of 13 inches.

thanks!

ill get some more plants soon, he loves to hide in the barrel and rest on the plant. He flares at nothing, not even his reflection, where as a fighter i had in the past would at everything even my finger when pressed up to the glass.

he seems to like to sit right upto the filter, sometimes i even think he is stuck to it. any suggestions?

my tank is a 60l, so if the silvers get that big, i wont get them.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

what a lovely betta you have there :good:

Now, down to the stocking issue..............noooooooooooo sharks what-so-ever, with bettas!

Sharks need to be with bigger fish, semi-aggressive to keep them balanced. If you get a shark, you base your stocking around that shark.

I would add more plants, go have a peek in our betta photo section, for ideas :good:

Harlequin rasboras would look good with your betta's coloring, you could go for ottos or corys as bottom feeders. I would go with 6 rasboras and 5 julii or panda corys.

Have you cycled your tank?

With the filter it sounds as though it's too strong for him. I've got that problem myself in my 60 ltr (so I'm no help there XD ), so it'd be worth asking perhaps if people have any ideas as to how to reduce the water flow and intake.
Have you considered the possibility of maybe dividing your tank in half, and getting another male instead of setting it up as a community? That's what I've done with my males, and if yours is that placid then perhaps you could even keep some pygmy cory's in there too?

what filter do you have? have you tried placing the water outtake, so that it's facing the glass?

tbh, he sounds placid, so he would be better off with a community, rather than sharing with another betta.

thanks folks, he really is placid, im not so keen on splitting it, i would like a community.

yes, i cycled my tank for one week, tested the water yesterday, PH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia levels are all ok.

i certainly add more plants tomorrow.

I have the fluval u2, so its double sided, one side is covered, however he is exposed to the other side of it, i maybe use some sort of mesh to cover that side however.

ill have a wee look at the recommended fish and see what i like.

thanks

Jamieboy, Its not possible to cycle a tank in a week, unless you have a major amount of media taken from anothr tank, that allows you to have a fully cycled tank. please see beginners guide to cycling in the beginners section...
heres the link for you

I agree with LilyRose! Unless you used mature media, a cycle virtually never takes a week. Did you add ammonia or fish food at all? Leave it ro run? How did you cycle? test your water every day for at least the next month and do any larg water changes needed to keep the levels of ammonia and nitrite at zero.

As for tank mates - all freshwater 'sharks' get too big for the tank, silver sharks especially so. I wouldn't keep silvers in less than a 6 foot long tank. Good tank mates for a betta would be corys, large shrimp (ghost/glass shrimp and amanos are often recommended), snails (apple snails are great) and maybe some shoaling fish (although many end up being nippy - I don't kep shoaling fish with my long finned bettas for that reason).

Adding some more live or silk plants is a must as well :good:

i added water from an established tank, plus squeezed an established filter into my tank. i have done tests and all is at normal.

That will not be enough to cycle it. Very little bacteria in the water and in the filter gunk - most bacteria is on the actual filter media. It will help, but you still need to keep an eye on the stats.

ive got my own testing kits, tested yesterday and today, all stats are still normal. il keep checking though.

they will stay normal for a very long time, asdyou only have a betta in there producing waste. it would never reach a nitrite spike at that rate....mark our words...you add fish now and they all die in a matter of weeks...please read through the fishless cycling thread, and rehome your betta in a 2 gallon tank, and do daily waterchanges for the next 6-8 weeks while you fully cycle your tank...we know what we are talking about,,,we have done all this before
many times over

you are noiw in a fish in cycle
what you do is this
test the water every morning and every night. once the level on ammonia or nitrite go to .25 you must perform a 80% waterchange. drain the tank to a quarter full, and refill with cechlorinated water,
( use brand called tapsafe/ tetra safe, to dechlorinate the water before it goes in the tank, or it will kill what little bacteria you may have)
every time the ammonia or nitrite goes up, do waterchange, it may be daily
at that rate it will take a good few months for the levels to return to normal and once they start to you will notice a rise in nitrAte level. which is what youn want to happen
the nitrate level should be kept below 20
so you are aiming for 0,0, <20
thisa will take quite a while to be established in a tank your size, with just one fish that is considered a claenish fish. the betta should only be fed 3 betta pellets/ 3 bloodwroms/ 2 flakes a day, more than this will cause bloating and constipation. it will be a good idea to give him a cooked deshelled pea once a week too...say on a sunday to get into a routine to ensure that he doesnt get constipated. hope that helps good luck

The betta will be fine in the big tank as long as ammonia and nitrite are kept at zero. No need to move him to a smaller tank. However, the OP has to test daily to be sure of what is happening and be willing to do 50%-90% water changes as needed.

Definitely don't add more fish until the cycle is well and truly over in a couple of months.

take a piece of sponge or other media from your existing tank (do not take more than one third) and put it in the new filter. instant cycle ,ESPECIALLY in such a large tank with one single betta. will be fine!
defo add more plants, id even do that before the next round of fish go in. test daily until all zeros (except nitrAte unless plants use it all up) for a week without doing waterchanges. then wait another week before adding more.
then you could go ahead and start stocking slowly. no more than 4 fish at a time if under 2 inches. wait and test test and wait until all stable for two weeks, add a few more fish.
that tank looks a fairly good size. you could have some nice shoals in there (by the looks of it, i could be deceived on the size tho). youve GOT to be patient with adding the fish tho. system can crash easily. wait several weeks between adding new guys (testing along the way).
and more plants/decor will help with the current from the filter. will give the betta some good spots to rest so he doesnt have to compete with the filter flow.
keep us updated. will be a nice tank! but dont be over zealous. do it slooooowwwwllllyyy :)
cheers
