My first betta, head seems very discolored is this the "mask" I hear people talk about? or is this some other "normal" thing, or does my fish have head lice?

Thanks!

also any info about her that you can ID from photo would be cool as she is LFS

Thanks, since she did not have this marking at purchase and she has been rapidly putting it on, I wanted to make sure it was just growing into her color, and not head lice :)

thanks for fast response!

they will tend to changes colour a little or rather colour intensity depending on what mood they are in. when stressed thy show lateral stripes and loose most of their colour butas they settle in they become more colourful.
heres an example of a young male i had, the first pic shows him living in the sorority tank as i was unsure as if he was male or female, then a pic of him on his own, its hard to belive they are the same fish

All of my girls have those marks and have had them since I bought them, they are perfectly fine so I am guessing all is normal. She is a real cutie!

the red on the gills is not a scrape, it's a fairly common marking. Many of my bettas in the past have had that.

My PK Male has a marking similar, although it is gold rather than red.. makes him looks as though he has a cat's eye on the side of his head.

I just spawned her with this male who was sold as a crowntail by LFS

I really wouldn't have reccomended that... VTs aren't popular and half of them end up dying in store cups... also, she probably wasn't properly conditioned. She could have died.

How would you know how well she was conditioned? I fed them both well as she set in a jar in his 55gal tank for 3 weeks while my starter cultures were growing...I started with LFS stock because I don't want 100.00 fish dying on my to rookie mystakes like thinking the mask is ick..

besides not breeding a VT just because there are a lot of VT is like not breeding your mouse or rabbit because someone else has some....kinda has nothing to do with genetics study..

but thanks for the advice!

actually, the trouble is that pet shop bettas tend to be complete mutts as far as tail type and coloration goes so it does have something to do with genetics... combtails and VTs and anything whose parents came from an LFS are highly undesireable to people who are interested in maintaining a quality breeding program.

That said, there's nothing anyone can do to stop you from doing it and as long as you can provide a home for any resulting fry, it doesn't really matter what you breed :good:
