Hi Guys, not trying to preach or anything, but I want to share my experience. I worked for an importer in Vermont and saw a lot of the negative aspects to the industry. I would have to say that around 40-50% of the fish that came in from overseas never made it to the pet shops. It doesn't seem to me that there is any kind of protection for these fish or monitoring of the importation process. They are so cheap, sometimes a couple of cents per fish that these losses were still at a manageable and profitable level. I would be interested to hear from others about their experiences or ideas.

I think most of the aquarium hobby is aware of the dramatic losses. But, there isn't too much we can do, if we want to stay in the hobby. Some people have to drive 2 hours to their nearest lfs to get fish, and they are most likely imported. I, like most aquarist, do my best to get locally bred fish, rather than imported ones. Thank you for the insight!
