My Crystal Red Shrimp Tank

Just a quick update, basically because I've took a photo I'm proud of :p

The shrimp seem to be doing well, I've spotted this baby that seems to have white claws, hopefully it will keep them as it grows. I'm planning to rearrange the tank at the weekend so i'll post more pics then.

Those colours are so blocked if you know what i mean, amazing colours :good:

Really nice photo of a sweet little guy, at about 1.5cm they tend to keep the colour they have, looks like it has a v band the middle red one, the mother must have high grade genes.

Its definitely got the v band, I couldn't get a good shot from the side because it wouldn't pose properly. This one is only a baby, less than 1cm, so fingers crossed it will keep its good looks.

I got very lucky in some ways, although i only have one female she has the best white markings of all my original shrimp. She even has the 2 head spots, None of the babies seem to have them but hopefully some will show up in the next generation.

I think shrimp are like fish, in that, you get what you pay for, and its worth paying a bit more for a better quality shrimp, that is a lovely photo, my crystals arent that nice, di

I've completed my budget rescape. Basically I've moved everything slightly and swapped some plants with my big tank :p

The Madagascan Lace Plant in the big tank hasn't been growing very well and was covered in algae. I've moved it and a handful of eco-complete into the shrimp tank. Its been in 4 days now and the shrimp are steadily clearing the algae. Hopefully it will Appreciate the lower temperature too. I've removed most of the Egeria densa as it had over grown the tank and picked off most of the Java Fern Plantlets. As a result the tank is a lot brighter,a lot more open and the shrimp a lot more visible.

I've got them some new food despite having a full bag of Crab Cusine waiting to be opened  Its JBL Novo Prawn and they love it. The only problem i've had with it so far is it doesn't want to sink unless i soak it first.

Here are the pics:

I'm so so jealous :X :X :X

Your tank looks brilliant :good:

I feed my shrimps JBL NovaPrawn too, as well as Crab Cuisine. Some pellets float but most will sink if you press them lightly at the water surface to break the surface tension. I usually crush them and mix with water and squirt around for my shrimps since I don't want the babies to crowd around a pellet and become puffer food themselves

It looks very good, nice healthy looking crs. The lace plant should do well in there, mine does very well in the shrimp tank, all their picking keeps the leaves nice and clean and the low temp suits the plant. Were you just feeding them crab cuisine before with nothing else, if so they do very well on it. I do feed it too but with veg and the JBL food it does sink after a short time in the water.
The tank looks really good.

The tank looks really good.

I was feeding them mostly crab cuisine but with some occasional algae tabs and random catfish food. I'm alternating between the crab cusine and JBL now.

The Lace plant looks like it is growing a new leaf already so its doing well too :good:

Well i guess this will be my final update... At least for this tank.

Over the weekend the tank has crashed and all my CRS have died. 1 died on Friday so i did a water change that night. Saturday morning another 2 were dead and it went downhill from there despite another 4 30% water changes over the weekend the rest have died last night.

I have my list of suspects and it will probably be a combination of a few of them...
  • There have been several power cuts in the middle of the night over the last month. The stats have been looking ok but its not that new a test kit so it could be lying and the tank could be going through a mini-cycle.
  • I'm probably guilty of overfeeding as the snails seem clear up most of the left overs, but probably not as much as i expect.
  • I've noticed my Declorinator has changed slightly. Stress Coat is now Stress Coat + and apparently gets rid of Ammonia too. The shrimp in my other tank seem ok so i doubt its this one but have read stories of changing declorinator killing other shrimp.
  • My sister is on holiday so we are looking after her cats. Last Monday we had to de-flea one of them and it might be possible some of the flea poison made it into the tank. I don't think this one is as likely due to the time between de-fleaing the cat and the shrimp dying.
  • I don't think temprature has been an issue as the tank seems to have stayed arround 22/23C the last couple of weeks

On the bright side it gave me a chance to count how many shrimp i had... There were between 70 and 80 including the tiny babies.

This tank is probably going to sit empty for a few months... with the old credit crunch i can't afford to replace the shrimp for now. Although if anybody else is breeding CRS I would love to buy some of the babies at some point :p

ouch, sorry to hear that mate :(

loads of my shrimp died recently, too :(

Thats not good, you had a nice thing going on there too

O and btw i lost a japonica shrimp yesterday, must be a shrimp illness going around. :look:
