Sorry to bring some bad news, but male and female bettas should not be kept together. Both males and females can be super aggressive towards each other, and it may be ok now, but any day it could all explode into chaos. Maybe because your tank is large that you are getting away with it, but it's really not recommended.

Anyway, he's very handsome :)

Concur - there may not be physical evidence of it but the stress on the female could cause early death.

As you have a big tank, have you thought about dividing the tank up, so the female and male can't get to eachother.

I know they can be aggressive. I have had tanks for over 20 years. I have a 30 gallon tank set up for my baby fish and if I see he is getting to be to much I separate them for a while.

Nice fish.

Why are you spawning in a community tank?

Also poor dyed fish, hopefully you bought them not knowing what they were :).

id love to see a pic of the full tank set up. there are a lot of post about "cant be done" "time bomb" etc., and if it is working im curious
he is a lovely boy. id imagine a community setting would definitely be best to try that out-distraction from each other etc.
how long have they been together?
ive got so many questions.
and im sure the OP is aware of the risk if she knows enough to take him out. and im not so certain those fish are dyed-may be gmo.
cheers

as said it is not recommened to keep both sexes together, however i had success in the past (before i knew anything i might add) and they got on fine, they wouldn't leave eachothers side, constantly together.

just have a back up plan incase it does get nasty :good:

they are both beautiful

Were they a breeding pair?

no, not a breeding pair, even added the male first then rescued the female from a neighbour that was going to flush her alive  it was my only tank at the time, if i remember correctly a 20gal tall tank, not much decore either

as said above its not a known thing to be done, and you will have to keep a eye on them but if they are getting along fine thats the main thing, just have a option to separate them if anything starts to kick off. the tetra below the two fighters... what type is it, very pretty

Lovely picture and would love a piccie of the full tank

Your bettas look healthy, and you do have a very large planted aquarium with other fish so its not just the 2 bettas alone to go at each other, but my concern would be the bettas would constantly try to breed and exhaust themselves, but being i've never seen a male and female betta living together for so long, mabye they get used to each other and establish a heirarcy and live peacefully? Again, yours do look pretty healthy you think they would have stress lines and torn fins but they are brightly colored. Does the male constantly chase the female, or does he leave her alone mostly?

Only thing is be careful of plastic plants could tear the bettas fins.

Not only that, but with all the excercise if they ever did breed those babies would be pretty healthy to have such active parents that have plenty of room to swim. Very similar to wild bettas habitat. And im sure in the wild at times of drought that females and males get "stuck" in the same body of water and 55 gallons is pretty large for domestic bettas so it must seem like a pond to them! The male tires himself out swimming so the female with less fins to carry im sure has more energy than the male.
