for a while 2 of my bettas have been acting weird. all they do is stay still. one of them lies next to his pot all day and the other one just sits at the top. recently one of my bettas died and he was acting like this. both the bettas are still eating but sometimes i need to put ym hand in the tank just to make sure they are still alive. ive done a water change and added a bit of salt.

ive lost a lot of fish lately and id rather not lose anymore. if you know whats wrong with them please post.

Lying on his side or just lying normally?

How often do you do water changes? What is your setup and routine? Water quality does stuff like this.

i do 100% water changes once a week. he the first one lies leaning against a pot.

thanks for the website ral ill have a look at it now.

EDIT: after reading that the first ones syptoms sounds a bit like this:

pale, gray or dull;stays at the bottom of the bowl only coming up for air

and what it suggest may be wrong with him is cold, stressed, vitamin deficiency. i dont have a heater for the tank but my third betta is doing fine so the tempurature of the water should be fine. im not sure how cold it gets at night but during the day it should be at least 26 degrees celcius. i cant imagine how he would be stressed either because nothing to 'stressing' happens around his tank. im not sure about the vitamin bit though i feed him a few hikari betta pellets a day and give him bloodworms sometimes. could this be the problem?

A 100% water change once every week is perfectly fine if each fish is in a 1 gallon tank.

I'm not sure if this will help but you might try adding 1/5 teaspoon aquarium salt (per 1 gallon) when you do your next water change. It might help your Bettas to fight whatever they are going through.

Sometimes, bloodworms carry bacteria that can harm the fish and so you might try feeding only the hikari pellets for a while and see if that helps your water quality.

I find that adding 1/5 tsp of aquarium salt and 1 drop of aquarisol in my 1 gallons tanks helps to keep my bettas quite healthy and does well as a preventative measure.

Hope this helps and that your Bettas recover well. :)

26 degrees celcius is okay, but if it's falling much below that at night, it's too cold for your bettas. They need constant, warm temperatures to stay in tip-top health. Also, if your tank is under 3 or 4 gallons, you need to do water changes more than once a week.
