Heya All!

We have 2 Juwel Rekord 120s (one old established one and one new one). The new one is currently cycling (fishless-thanks to this forum!), and the old one is an established community tank. I have in there:

a pleco (can't remember which strain but he won't get any bigger than 5 or 6 inches)
8 Danios (Zebra and Leopard)
and a betta (who gets on with the Danios just fine he is very chilled out I love him)

I only have one problem, and wondered if anyone could help?

The filter is a standard one that came with the tank, but when my betta swims up to the intake grill, his fins stick to it (but don't go in) . He can swim away again if he tries but I wondered if there was a way of stopping him swimming right near it? Any ideas?

Cheers, any ideas welcome. :D

Check with your LFS and see about getting a little sponge to wrap around it, or you could try making one yourself.

good idea, what sort of sponge should I use? A filter sponge (as i know it's fish safe) or something else?

Have you tried using part of a stocking or tights to cover the intake. works great with fry, so should aid you untill can you think of something permanent.

I wish I knew what to do about that too as one of my boys loves leaning on the intake. Although I have read storied of bettas who just like to lean against the intake. Who knows?

Maybe he just likes it then? Especially if other people like you (KNT 505) have the same problem with their fish. There is a small airstone in the tank (up one end so that he can have still water as well) but he swims right over it and hovers there enjoying the bubbles lol.

He's very happy in the community tank, otherwise I would move him, I don't know if this is normal but he just loves the space, he meanders through the plants and sometimes has a nap in his hammock (very cute). I'll put some photos up soon need to get my camera out but he is gorgeous!

If the filter does not suck up his tail and tear it I would not worry. It depends on the strength of the filer. I have had lots of long tailed boys who liked to let their tails wrap around the filter intake. Just be sure the intake is not so strong to suck up his tail and tear it or cause damage that could get infected.

Thanks for reassuring me his fins don't go into the filter they just wraps around. I think i might still have a go with a stocking over it though just to be doubly sure, is there anything I need to do to a new stocking before I pull it over the intake?
