Fish Herder
I thought I'd start a short and sweet journal on my betta sorority.
The tank is a 17 inch cubed glass tank. It is around 20 US gallons / 80 litres. The tank also has a glass lid.
I am planning on adding 8 crowntail bettas, 6 pygmy cories and 3 otos.
I picked up the tank which was a bargain on ebay. It was very dirty with the worst watermarks I have ever seen. But I can't complain, I got it cheap and the glass itself was in perfect condition.
Lots of elbow power, vinegar and lemon juice later I finally saw the end of the tunnel.
It was then time to add some black gloss to the back so my betta's colours would pop nicely.
Then it was time to wash the playsand.
Mature filter and heater were added and this is what I had for the next 24 hours.
During that time I added 4ppm of ammonia to make sure the filter was truly mature and thankfully it was all processed within 12 hours so I felt safe enough to add my pygmys that I had in another tank.
Pygmys exploring their new home
Then it was time to go shopping for plants. The plan is to create a bit of a beach scene with coconut huts and plants that look like palm trees.
This is what I came home with
Hyprophilia corymbosa
Cryptocoryne wendtii
Rotala roundifolia
Hydrocotyle verticillata
And some more that weren't labelled...
All planted
Pygmys like their new home
My bettas have been ordered and the fish dealer is going to get me 8 on Tuesday. Beforehand I will still add the ottos and add some algae rocks for them (I keep a few in water in the sunlight constantly) so they should also settle in before the bettas arrive.
I hope that the planting and hiding spaces is enough. It is not all visible on the pictures, but for example behind the rocks and the wood there are gaps for them to hide and obviously the plants and the coconuts will also be a refuge from aggression.
