Christmas day I left for lunch at my father in laws....everything was fine in the world of my betta tank. When i got home i found my red betta Ramjet had jumped into the other side of the tank which houses Pinky my pink male betta. Which i didnt think would happen because they are in an aqua start 320 with a divider in it and it is fully enclosed. They like to jump though when i feed them...

Ramjet has about 80% of his tail missing and holes through his other fins. There is no wounds on him and his flippers are still flipping around. If i hadnt of found him when i did he would of been breakfast!! He is eating well and swimming round still. I have had to place the left over penplax divider on the top of the tank/under the actual lid so he didnt jump again. Im wondering if his tail is going to grow back to full normallity and if he will make a full recovery? I have been treating him with Melafix and Pimafix and am doing a water change tmw. There is no damage to Pinky at all. I have also been leaving the tank light off while its being dosed in meds as i found this keeps the water clarify better for longer. Is there anything else i can do to aide his recovery??

Tank details:

Pink Aqua Start 320
internal filter
heated to 26-28deg celcius
lighting 5hrs a day and 2 hrs at night (found if i leave the light on for 8hrs at a time i get algea build up)
gravel
ph 7.0
no ammonia nitrate or nitrite
1 silk plant in either side
1 ornament pot in each side
1 air stone in each side

Is the provided picture the the result of the fight?

If so, that does not look like a betta fight.....

I've had a few divider incidents that ended in disaster. Make sure that the dividers are well above the surface of the water and look them over 10 times for gaps.

0 nitrate is a rarity.... so what are the true stats of the tank?

Sometimes filter intakes can damage betta fins...... are the inlets covered?
------------------------

now if the other betta has actually made it to the other side of the tank:

check for gaps in the divider ... again ... (the pic doesn't look totally secure to me).

a bit of melafix is all you need..... clean water will do the same, but at a slower pace.

... in my experience, both bettas have some damage in a confrontation.

i seriously doubt your nitrAtes are 0, unless you have just done a WC.

his tail should grow back but may not look as good as before, just keep an eye out for any infections

No the picture is before he was attacked. I didnt want to photograph him now as he looks terrible and didnt want to stress him out. The divider sits flush the glass. I cut it to fit the front and back glass panels. the water is about an inch below the top of the divider.

And my nitrate is at 0. Always is unless i dont do my weekly 30% water change. And i use a liquid test kit. I test the tank every two days when i test my other 4ft and 3ft.

Here's some photos i just took. hes still full of life.

He doesnt look as bad as mine did when a similar thing happened to me and my betta boys. as others mentioned i kept the water really clean and used a bit of melafix and a few months later, no worse for wear! fins grew back in no time. and i agree. recheck that divider. it is amazing how SMALL a space they can squeeze thru.
good luck!

I have a particular female betta that can jump 6 inches in to the air. when you have two male next to each other like that I would always put a bit of glass or plexiglass over the divider under the hood, thats the only sure way to prevent them from jumping.

also very clean water and as little new stress as possible and he should be good as new. the colors of the regrown fins may take a while to come in, but they eventualy do.

yeah i ended up cutting peice of plexiglass to fit ontop of the divider but under the tank lid. Cut holes in it to still drop food in. Ive been dosing with Melafix and havent had the light on the last day. if we hadnt of found him when we did he would of come off a lot worse!

im sooooo weary of divided tanks now.... i've had my utter misfortunes.

your guy looks alright. just make sure the divider is secure and he has clean water.

no worries  ;)

edit: btw he looks a lot like my first betta..... coincidentally he received some fatal damage in a divider mishap (had him for a few months and his injuries were very, very, very severe after my young CT did his damage) . I had to put him down :(........

not to be a downer (at all!). The fins will grow back in no time ;)

Well my betta Ramjet that got attacked is doing well :) He even flared for the first time since i got him when i put his lil pink mirror up to the tank (good old christmas bon bon gift!) His tail is regrowing and all thought the regrowth isnt coloured yet he is swimming round and eating well. I am still treating with Melafix and plan to do this till it is fully regrown. I am persisting with water changes every two days now that he is getting better. I will post pics soon of his regrowth :)
