I went to the petstore on my lunch break from work and rescued a betta that had been severly mistreated. I told the people at the LFS that I wasn't going straight home that I need them to put him in a cup not a bag. They said they'd fix me up. They sure did. They put him in a HUGE bag and filled it full of oxygen. The only problem is, by the time I got back to work all the air had leaked out. In a hurry I ran to a restuarant across the street and got a styrofoam cup to keep him in until I got home. Thing is, now he's going crazy trying to jump out. I put a lid on it and poked a couple of holes in it so that he could breathe. It's seriously freaking me out. Could it be stress? Could it be the styrofoam? Could it be because he was used to being in a tank with a filter? This is really freaking me out. What should I do? Do you think he'll be okay for a couple more hours?

Erm... certainly sounds like the poor fish is freaking out. Surely you should just leave work now and take the betta home?! Personally speaking, I really wouldn't leave it a couple more hours..! Nice that you've rescued a severely mistreated fish, but putting it in a styrofoam cup is not......

If you can use a plastic cup. Also it may be the water that he is having a problem with. It may also be stress.

Bettas are okay without a filter.

poor things probably scared to death not being able to see anything in that cup. Do you have any way of getting a decent sized plastic cup? Also god know what they use to treat those cups that might be bad for bettas, could be reacting to some nasties in the water.

Did you keep the bag and/or the water? I say just put him back in the bag with the water from the lfs.

Hows the betta now, salt for stress it will calm him down.
