Hi ,need advice quick ,i`ve got 3 bamboo shrimp and they haven`t opened their fans for over a day ,2 are hiding and 1 is putting his head above the water whilst siting on the filter but alas with it`s fans closed ,have fed them algae wafers, which dissolve on the bottom into the water and cucumber ,any help appreciated,my tank `s over 6 months old?

how long have you had them as it may well be their time...

or they are just eating at night coz they arent hungry...

Thanks for replying ,i`ve only had them a few days ,but expected from what i`ve read for them to always have their fans out. Does anyone keep bamboo shrimp and can advise me please?

Something may be wrong with your water maisy. They should almost always have their fans open. You may have some ammonia, nitrite or high nitrates. Or your temperature is too high. Test your water asap and post the results. Also post the temp of your tank. Even if your test results for ammonia and nitrite come up as 0, do a 50% water change, make sure the tap water temp isn't too different from the tank water. There is also a chance that you have over fed them? How much are you feeding them?

Hi ,thanls for replying, ammonia and nitrites are 0,temp is 24c ,was feeding algae wafers, about 3 daily broken up ,so when corys ate them they dissolved in water ,2 have now dissappeared along with several amano ,so presume they`re dead ,and being eaten. Also lost 1 amano this morning ,don`t know if it`s coincidence though as it was a new one .All my fish are fine ,really annoyed as beautiful creatures

What has disappeared? 2 cories? What other fish are in the tank? Your fish are not fine if they are disappearing...

No ,not my fish ,my other 2 bamboo shrimp, who are hiding and several amano shrimp have gone missing ,got up and found 2 shedded skins ,i think 1 looks like an amano ,not sure of the other ,it might be a bamboo ,but the other 2 are still hiding behind the wood ,1 is on top but still not feeding, will justhave to wait and see what happens ,cleaned flter out last night as flow seemed a bit slow, flow is faster but need to do a water change as when i put the filter back on a bit of muck went into water, thanks for your help

If your water parameters are ok and it's a "fairly" mature tank I won't worry. They hide when they shred their shells, until the new shell is hardened. I don't see all my shrimps all the time. Always think they are dead, then one day they will come out and say hi. Funny little things they are. Bamboos are filter feeder so they don't eat algae wafer like the others do. They are supposed to eat suspended particulates (food) in the water (hence filter feeder). They need some kind of water current to aid feeding. Mine would occasionally pick stuff from the fine gravel to eat. Try not to worry. They are like pleco... they come out when they feel like it.

They are peaceful and don't eat other shrimp or fish, only particles in the water column. As for your pH, is it always that low? What is the pH of your tap water?

Hi ,no normally the ph of my tank is between 6.8 and 7.2 ,also my tap water ,have done a 50 percent water change ,but all shrimp are hiding now.

As long as you're keeping ammonia and nitrite at 0 and the temp is good and you're doing the weekly water changes, I wouldn't worry too much more about it. The shrimp will find their food in the water column. If you see them scrabbling about on the ground looking for food then this is an indication that there is not enough food. At that point then, you would have to crush up some spirulina or flake very fine and swirl it into the water. It sounds to me like you are on the right track.
