Tank and cabinet:

Cabinet I built myself - I know having a computer right next to a fish tank isn't a good idea, but space is tight!
I also built the hood, it's a bit rubbish and I knocked it up in about an hour, just a temporary job until I get round to doing a proper one. After the cabinet, I was kind of DIY'd out!

Closer to the tank:

This is my first attempt at a proper(ish) planted tank, it's going reasonably well. I bought a batch of plants off ebay, it made a good start but there's too many in there that are tall and straggly - plus they shed leaves like you wouldn't believe! I'll be replacing them over time with something with a bit more bulk.

I must be doing something right though, these plants are growing like crazy, some of them have been heavily pruned two or three times already. And that's with no ferts, CO2 or decent substrate.

Right side, my pair of gouramis and the pleco hiding under the wood:

Gouramis, one of the clowns and a couple of ruby barbs:

Plec in his favourite spot:

Left side, a solitary neon and a SAE resting on the bogwood:

As some of you might see, the sword in the middle is looking a bit ragged, this is partly due to being chewed by some of the fish
, but it also seems to be struggling with nutrients. It's picked up a bit since my last pruning session, but I think it's time I started looking into fertilisers.

Full stock list:
1x angel
5x clown loach
4x black ruby barb
2x three spot gourami
1x RTBS
1x pleco (unknown type, I'm assuming common so may have to get rid of him at some point)
2x neon tetra (getting old now, when they die off they won't be replaced)
4x kuhli loach
2x SAE

I know it's not a great stock list, this has come about from me not really knowing what I was doing when I first got into all this, and also from inheriting a few fish from an emigrating friend. It all works though, amazingly, the only aggression I've seen is the angel picking on the plec!

Comments & suggestions welcome! :good:

the tank looks great!! but those clowns will have to go sooner or later...right now i have 5 clown in my 55 too (rehoming them very soon, today or tomorrow) how big are yours right now?

Thankyou! :)

The biggest clown is about 5 inches or so, they're still young and have a bit of growing to do yet. I'd hate to get rid of them - they're my favourites - so I'm planning on a bigger (6ft or so) tank as soon as I can move to a bigger place.

Yea pretty soon they will need something bigger...i still am in with my parents so a 55 is all i can keep for the time being, i really dont want to get rid of my clowns but one day i'll have a big shoal of like 15 or so ;) if i can manage lol

If I might offer a comment not so much about your tanks but about one thing which I have highlighted as a quote.

For me I personally am quite disgusted      .

Not by your stock list, but, by the very fact that you feel you have to be sorry for it. I for one think the most FANTASTIC thing about this hobby is how people do what they do and how their tanks are a measure of their own personalities. :good:

Personally to me it is great to see others in this hobby and shortcuts such as your canopy diy mean nothing at least it has a canopy and the fish tank looks superb and I bet your fish are happy an healthy.

Over the summer of 08 I mass purchased over 40 tanks of sizes from 10g to 180g and about 60% of them came with fish.

Your tanks look great, they have fish in them and the personal touches of the diy look fine to me.

Good on ya!

Ah nice tank. good stocking. Probably dont place the neon because they will get eaten by the angel.

Nice tank.

Your pleco has a nice hiding place.

Thanks all!

Paul: The neons are already in there, and have been for some time. I know the angel is supposed to eat them, but I don't think he knows this! They get along just fine.

cjs: Good words, well said. I've never felt the need to apologise about my stocking, it's just that if I were to go and do it all again from scratch I wouldn't have a lot of the fish I've got in there. But I guess a lot of us could say that! As for the DIY bit, the photos don't really show the canopy in great detail, so it looks better than it really is. Like I say, it's just a temporary job! And yes, the fish are all happy, the healthiest lot I've ever owned. I'm quite proud of where I am so far! :good:
