Here he is. Tail shape isn't that easy to see-he's not much of a flarer, even though he's next to Levi atm! It does look a lot different to Levi's VT though. His is flattish on the end, but Rufus' is tapered.

The clear and black areas on his tail are what I'm wondering about. I don't recall seeing them in the shop, but his colour was very dull the first day he was settling in, and they appeared after that. I've been treating with melafix for 6 days and there's been no change in them at all. Could it just be his natural colouring?
He built a bubble nest this morning

to be honest it does not look like finrot. the clear bits you are seeing is new growth and will color up eventually. i see in the first pic he had some of the dark coloration on the tip, and then the second it is appearing on the margin more. has his fin seemed to get any shorter? (doesnt appear to be in the photos)? he looks in wonderful condition, and the melafix will be great for encouraging growth in his fins (along with the IAL )...id keep an eye on the fins and see if they are getting SHORTER, which they dont appear to be. he obviously happy making bubble nests for you.
i personally think its just normal coloration and nothing to worry about. some bettas have dark "stripe" along the outter edge of their fin(s)...i have a boy like that and when i first noticed it i was thinking "huh-wonder what that's all about"...kept his water clean and kept an eye on him and it did turn out to be nothing more than coloration.
good luck and enjoy the fish :)

Usually they make bubble nests when they are healthy and happy. I am sure it's not finrot.

I think he is a veiltail. :)

Might be new growth. He looks like parts of his fins are missing, a little anyway.

Thanks guys :) The 2 shots were taken almost at the same time, just different lighting I guess. I haven't noticed any change at all in his tail, no shortening or anything. I'll keep up with the treatment and see what happens.
Maybe he's a VT variation then, 'cos he's def. a lot different to Levi-see pics in this thread.

he's defo a vt. looks pointed as his fins are still growing but the bottom edge is the same length as the top (if you see what im trying to say)...ir doesnt look at all to me that he is missing any parts to his fins. that's just how they are growing. he is a gorgeous red (im a softy for the red ones) and looks in great condition!
cheers
