I've always wanted an aquarium & I've finally got round to it!

Bought a 160l tank, couple of months back. Set it all up. After a few weeks took water in to fish shop, tested and way high on ammonia. They said, change some water, leave it a couple of weeks, then bring some more in for test. 3 weeks later went back....ammonia gone.... but high nitrites .....come back in a couple of weeks. Went back Friday...water tested perfect.

So now have 5 rosy tetras swimming around. The smallest one of the 5 seems quite content swimming around on his own, leaving the other 4 to swim together. Gave them their 1st feed Sunday and they all got stuck in straight away. Being feeding them every other day & they all seem quite happy. However I noticed this morning I seem to have a few snails!

Hopefully all will go well & I can look forward to incresing numbers in the coming months.

Have to say the advice & support from the branch of Maidenhead aquatics I used seemed very good.

~When you say you just left the water, did you add ammonia in that time? Are the rosy tetras the only fish taht have ever been in the tank?

Also are you sure they aren't rosy barbs?

But, yay for new tank :D pictures?

Yes added an ammonia source at the outset.

And yes rosy tetras only fish that have been there. Absolutely certain they are tetras, any reason for asking?

Sounds great, as for your snails just pick them out to try and keep them under control as they can become a massive pest in no time. They probably arrived on a plant as eggs or tiny, sand-grain-sized snails. Other than pufferfish (and some species of loach, although i've had no success) eat snails and puffers wouldn't be suited to your community? aquarium, as for loaches the main one that supposedly eats snails is the clown loach which would get too big.

I suggest you up the shoal of Rosy Tetras (for Hanny's reference, Hyphessobrycon Rosaceus) to around 12 for more impact.
