hi
ok i realy need help i removed a plant from the pot and then there was cotton wrapped around it well i decided to take the cotton off aswell and well iv put the cotton back as best i can an put the plant back in the water until i get responses on what i should do as i have a horrid feeling ive murdered this plant :(

That's not cotton, its rock wool and should be removed. Gently pull it away from the roots, then rinse the roots well in declorinated water. Cut the roots back to about an inch and a half if they are longer than that, then shove it into the substrate.

Why on earth would you cut the roots back? Wouldnt that be bad for the plant?

i have yet to remove the rockwool from any of my plants.. it won't hurt anything... and as for cutting the roots its to promote more growth, but again i have yet to do that..

just finished doing all that :hey: :good:

Rock wool won't hurt anything but inhibits root growth. They simply don't have as much free space to spread out. Its like trying to yawn and stretch in a small closet, as opposed to doing it while standing in the middle of your living room.

roots grow through rock wool.

not like it really matters too much either way anyways. so might as well take it off.

Cutting roots promotes growth????????? I have grown plants ever since I was a child (not aquatic mind you) and have never heard that before! I guess you would get root growth but surely this would be the plant trying to grow back the root you just hacked off!!
IMHO I would not cut away at a plants roots but accomodate the roots it has in the planting medium spreading them out the best I could.
I could be wrong but until somebody can tell me why I dont think I'll be chopping the roots off of my plants :)

I dont cut the roots aswell but apparently it sends a message to the plant saying grow grow grow you have just been limited and then plant just spreads in all ways trying to make up for the loss and in the process anchering itself nicly.
