Wednesday evening last week I introduced 7 MTS to my newt tank to help stir the sand up. The MTS weren’t huge, maybe 1cm each. So as of this week (not quite 7 days later)…I have 7 adults never in my sand and I’ve counted at least 7 babies, I’m sure there are at least 9 since 2 of the babies are rather big.

The tank is a cold water tank (well room temperature) and we didn’t think they’d breed as quickly. I’d chosen them so that they wouldn’t breed like mad and over take the tank. They appear to be breeding quicker in the cold water tank than the tropical tank they came out of.

The population will only get as large as the food permits. Dont overfeed and you wont have a snail explosion (you may see lots of little ones but they wont make it to adult size if you dont overfeed).

MTS breed faster than most, giving birth to 1 baby per snail every 2-3 days normally. The babies are born live and like mini-adults, so less likely to be eaten by anything.

The food in the tank is algae, I had a lovely nerite helping keep it under control but unfortunately he died, hence I thought i'd try something else. One the algae had been eaten a but hopefully they'll slow down.

The tank isn't over fed. My newts get fed twice a week and their food isn't left in long
