Mr And Mrs Tubbylala's First Tropical Tank

Good on you for doing your research first. It's SO easy to get things right from the start; all you need is a little patience. A word about the gravel, though; If you do go for bottom dwellers like Corys, you'll have to make sure the gravel is smooth. A lot of brightly coloured gravel can be rough or sharp and could damage a Cory's barbels. Welcome to the site - and come here first with any questions.

Update:

As we inherited a mature filter with the tank with loads of good bacteria in it. It cycled very quickly and was handling the ammonia we put in so after reading around the forum finding threads about cycling with mature filters and checking water levels we tentatively went and got fish. LFS advised silver tipped tetra but they proved territorial and not happy far too many males in there, so they were returned and the sales assistant who sold them to us was given an earful. (believe me we are learning about conflicting advice) Their guppies looked poorly sick and dead fish were apparent after they had looked quite healthy 4 days previously, we were going to leave but Mr TubbyLaLa spotted a red betta in a tank swarming with tetra and three odd floaty brown fish. His fins were a being nipped and he had no where to hide and judging with the downfall of health in the guppy tank things did not bode well for him. So probably a rookie mistake but instead of a refund the assistant got an ear chewing and we took the betta home. He has been browsing his palacial home, he is loving castle greyskull and has been swimming through it, round it, and in it. We have 6 live plants for him to hide out in but he is generally investigating pushing a few rocks about. Not sure about all such time in between changing fish in tanks and possible diseases but the fish came from the same tank so I presumed universal germs would be there if any so basically thought this poor guy would be better off with us than stuck being mobbed by a swarm of nasty nippers.

We have called him Wafty.....
