I am thinking about buying a breeding pair of mozambican mouth brooders from my LFS and he has told me that they will go with almost anything so long as it isn't to small. I really like them a lot and would prefer to have some more info on them, any help please? does anyone have any themselves?

I have kept these great fish in the past and have found them to be good with other fish so long as the others are not too agressive towards these. They seem to be one of the more peaceful of there species but could get to around 10" so you will have to have a tank of around 50 gallons or more I would reccomend. They are really easy to breed and they colour change is great to watch although they do dig a pit so these are not reccomened if you have a aquascaped tank with alot of plants as they will simply dig them up! It was the pink/red variety of this fish that I kept and it was a great fish but unfortunally my electricity went off one day and it was dead by time I got home :(. This was very strange for this type of fish as they normally accept to any range of PH and oxygen in your tank and cope with quite poor quality water (Although for best growth I would reccomend you keep your water clean!). They can live in a broad range of tempratures although I would say I found around 22-26 degrees C to work the best :D. IMO they would do well in a tank which had mainly predators not agressors in as I mentioned earlier if you kept with thinks such as Jack Dempsy's, flower horns etc I would expect the MMB to come off the worst. The ideal companions I would say would be larger clownloaches , quite large eel's (5-15" would be good), some of the larger catfish such as tigs would also work well. The price range is very cheap in the country they orginate from as they are used for the food market there but over here (partly due to shipping and UK's price's!) I would expect to pay around £25-30 per fish depending on size.

Hope this helps you and I would definatly reccomend this great fish if you tank is over 50 gallons,

It's over thirty years since I kept these - they are very much like Oscars - need the same space, companions & they get to similar sizes - 15"+ for the males but I've never seen a female over a foot ( Not including tail of course.)
I would say a 6x2x2 tank is a minimum for a pair.

Thank you very much for sharing your experiances, I had heard that they were reasonably peacful. I would be keeping them in a tank with a 15" fire eel 2 golden severums etc. Again thyank you very much :D

Its no problem we are all here to learn :D. The fire eel and golden sev's should definatly be ok and as you said etc I presume you mean other fish with the same temprement as the fish you mentioned so it sounds like it should be good! So what size tank are you going to be keeping them in? It would be best if it was atleast 50G. If you do get them be sure to include some pics in this thread please :D. I do agree they have sort of the same genetic traits as oscars but I have found these to be a lot more peachful and tolerant of other fish. They have the same 'interactions' with humans as oscars do and mine used to always follow me around when I was walking around in the room with there tank in and they were also great fun to hand feed. You have to be careful though as you dont want to feel guilty all the time at their begging faces and end up causing bad water probs from overfeeding!
:D :D

Again all the best and if you do get them please post pics!,

I would be more than happy to post some pics for you all once I have got them, and you presumed correctly when I said etc. lol

Also thanks for the tips and I will be careful not to over feed.

Thanks again.
