Ok so I am getting my 72 gallon set up this weekend.  I have a 55 gallon up and running, but not fully stocked.  All fish have been rehomed with the exception of a BN pleco that I am planning to keep.  I have black sand in the 55 that I would like to move to the 72.  How do I go about moving it?  Anyone have any tips/tricks?  Thanks in advance.

I just scoop out as much as possible in the beginning, or you can take a siphon and suck out the sand slowly, you will have to keep dumping out the water but youll end up getting all the sand off the bottom in the end.

Thanks... yeah i was thinking about siphoning.  That might help get it a little cleaner too.

You cant use the ones with the big plastic tube on the end, if you can pull it off so it has maximum suction for the sand.

I recently shut down a tank, and I found the easiest way was to drain almost all the water and then I used a dustpan to scoop out the substrate. This enabled me to get large quantities out in a shorter space of time than the potential syphon method I was previously planning.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did a combo of both methods... scooped and then used the siphon for the last bit of it.  Worked great!

Great ... Now onto phase 2... with pics ;)
