I bought a nice 3 1/2 ft piece of Drift wood from Watermarque in Yeovil last month, looked awesome for a week or 2 then it starts getting this sappy/mucusy hairy looking white mould all over it!

Made my tank really cloudy to so i took it out and put it in the garden for some UV treatment.

What is it? and is it dangerous to fish?

(Yes I did scrub it in boiling water and soak it before i put it in the tank....this is what it did look like..

not sure but thinking maybe its sap still leaking from the wood, maybe it came striaght from fresh, hopefully someone can help you out, try taking it out, run the bath water as hot as you can get it, then fill bath, soak in here scrubbing the wood, repeat a few times,,,thats what i did and my woods clean and does not leak, some people do it in oven but dont think that will fit

yea take the wood out or there will be a huge mess in the tank, just clean up the wood out side the tank that should be all thats needed

bye the way thats really cool tank and wood ;)

I have the exact same kinda wood. It got a white film all over it. this has now gone a few months on and some nice green algae is growing. I just brushed it off now and then. fish liked it though.

Thanks for the info guys, think im gonna try Nellys idea sounds the best bet cos its a bit big to do much else lol! I gotta feeling that wood might of been meant for Reptile tanks...I hope not cos it looks wicked when its clean...its got liek a really bright red colour. :)

Thanks for the comments on the tank guys, my tank thread is in my sig if you want a gander :)

Have a look at my main forum below.
I have the same. was bright red when it went in. Has gone more dull now. Happy to send you a pic. I also thought same about reptile

Oh and you can see some mould on one of the pics

Yer i like the look of it too so stuck with mine. looks great now. But the colour does fade a bit

I would take it out and scrape it down with some 300 grit sand paper. This will take the top layer of wood off along with all of the gunk that is on it. The grain of the wood will still show.

I liek the bark colour tho so don't wanna mess it up.

I have taken it out now and brushed the crap out of it :p
