the other day i noticed that 2 fish had white spots on them. the other 2 fish and pleco didnt. i was going to add the copper safe after i did a 75% water change today. well today when i woke up i found that 11 fry are dead and so are 2 platys. i still have the pleco, 2 platys and 2 fry. the ammonia is 1, ph 7.2 and nitrate and nitrite 0. the tank has only been set up for 1 1/2 weeks. is there enough fish to cycle the tank? if they all die how do i cycle the tank? the last time i had a tank i still made all of the newbie mistakes but they all lived, im so confused.

if your nitrate & nitrite are 0 and your ammonia is 1 your tank isnt cycled at all, your fish are basically being poisened by the high ammonia (should never allow it to get above 0.25 same as the nirtite)

for the fish to survive you will need to do large water changes to get the ammonia level down and coninue to do this untill the tank is fully cycle which could take 6 - 8 weeks

after doing a fish in cycle myself rescently i would personally advise you to take all the fish back to the fish store and read up on here how to do a fishless cycle, unless your prepaired to do 50% water changes every day as a minimum for the next few months

The white spot is being brought on by the bad water conditions. As mentioned, start doing water changes (start with about 50%) to get the levels down. You can do several a day if needed. Your goal is to get ammonia and nitrite below .25 ppm and keep them there until they are both back to zero. The fish you have left will be plenty to cycle the tank. Usually, you only want 3 or 4 hardy fish for a fish in cycle. You will probably still end up losing some of the fry but if you get the levels down and keep them there you may be ok. If you do end up losing all your fish, try a fishless cycle.

You should always have good water conditions at all times the fish poo and left over food is what killed ur fish do a 50% water change and clean up left over food

good luck with your fish
