OK,....getting the mesh gutter guard and the suction cups. Going to place it along part of the back wall of my aquarium. Are there any other options besides java moss? Riccia would go upward too much, as I think it has to be flat. Any other suggestions, or should I just go with the java?

Java moss. This will still grow up towards the light. All you have to do is trim it down. :good:

weeping moss, willow moss, taiwan moss.

when you do it, rather than sandwich the moss inbetween the 2 grids, use 1 then tie the moss onto it using fishing line, otherwise it takes ages for the moss to grow through and cover the grid up.

Those mosses are nicer, but I haven't been able to find them, and I am going to need enough to cover a 6 inch by 20 plus long inch mesh. I like the suggestion. I was just going to use one grid, rather than 2, but I didn't think I'd have to use something stronger than thread. Will the fishing line just deteriorate also? And, how mcuh moss will be enough by a 6 by 20 mesh oe 6by 25???

Just a tip. I notice in another thread you want cardinals. when I had cardinals and then started a moss wall 4 of them died behind the mesh. They are expert at getting through the tiniest of gaps whilst being totally inept at 'retracing their steps' to get out!!!

as far as i know fishing line doesnt deteriorate, if it does, it takes a long time, it may become brittle.

i have never done a moss wall so i dont know how much you need., but it is surprising how far the moss wil spread out.

Thanks for the tip...I definitely am going to start adding color with guppies, rams, and botia striata, to compensate for the traded clowns. I am not sure I have the water quality for cards, and perhaps I'll just wait until I move and try the discuss tank before I amke that commitment. I hate when fish die...may substitute some neons for the cards, but I really wanted more brilliant colors. Giant danios are my main fish, and I like their natural look, but I wanted more color.

The moss wall will be 46 inches long and 6 inches from top to mid tank. LOL...I figure, why not go for it. I bought the gutter mesh today, and it was cheap. Got the suction cups too. I really want a nice moss, but I think I will really need a lot of it. My question is, do I weave the moss in and out of the mesh or just lay it on top. and, can I use thread instead of fishing line? And, sorry, one more question, do I just wrap it like a taco, or weave in and out with the thread (or fishing line) as well. This is going to be something. I think I'll order weeping or christman moss online, in a very large quantity of something.

it will look awesome when you have finished :)

just lay the moss on top of the mesh
thread is fine, but fishing line is invisible.
IMO you just 'wrap it like a taco' lol. Perhaps you can put the odd weave every 4" just so it is more secure.

As a long time fisherman (30yrs), I have noticed that fishing line only gets brittle when it is left out of water and exposed to sunlight. It can last a long time in the water, I have dragged up line that appears to have been in the water for up to 10 years due to the condition of the hook that was attached. UV light breaks down fishing line however in the water it takes a long, long time to do so. Thread is more likely to fall apart faster then fishing line, however it can be easier to work with. If you are going to use any type of fishing line, I would use a real small diameter line of 5lb. test or lighter. In my opinion the best option is to get what they call tippet material used for flyfishing. It is almost invisible in the water and comes in smaller diameters that are just as strong as 5lb. test fishing line. It comes in smaller lots then buying a whole spool of fishing line when you only need a few feet of it. They usually come in spools of 25 to 30yds. compared to spools of 3000 to 3200yds. for the same pound test fishing line.

For example - You could get a spool of 5x tippet material that is 25yds. long (.006" diameter) and 4.5lb.(2kg) test for roughly $4.00 (US) compared to getting a spool of fishing line that is 3200yds. long in 5lb. test (.015" diameter) for roughly $18.00 (US). It is alot easier to tie and work with then regular fishing line, it looks like human hair but is 100x stronger.

I hope this helps you out, and would love to see pictures of the moss wall when you have it in place.
