Moss Balls

I have received marimo balls as balls and as a lawn attachmed to rock/driftwood. I have attached some of them myself, and, the one consistency in all the attached ones I have is....they are turning brown! Does anyone know how to keep them healthy and green? I have tried rinsing them when I do my water changes, and I try not getting excel directly on them. The amano shrimp seem to keep the algae clean, but the green is only smattered within the brown. I can't seem to get it all green...???!!!

Good flow is important.
Keep up the nutrient dosing. Halving the Excel dosing could help.
