I was doing a dead pull in the feeder fish tanks at work and found some eastern mosquito fish (Gambusia holbrooki)! The feeders came in on tuesday and I am assuming that they came from florida because they had the mosquito fish in with them. I was freaking out because I have been trying to get these fish for like a year and today I got them 12 for a dollar. I am going to have to isolate them because they were with the feeders and are from the wild (another first for me) but soon I am gonna have swarms of the little things! I am so excited, its like christmas if christmas involved getting new fish!

Good for you!! I've never seen mosquito fish before, how are they look like? Post some pics if you can and share with us.

Yea that's all they are ...... Actually aslot of preservations and lakes tryed too use these guys too lower the number of musqiotos but it back fired.....All they did was end up pushing and killing more species of fish out of odies of water ...... I think musquito fish and gumbusia are 2 diferent things correct ??? I don't understand why you would get these instead of looking for a lfs that seels good feeders .... One of my franchise stores sells Green sword tails as feeders

I didn't get them to be feeders. I just want to breed them myself. They are native to warm climates and have been introduced all over the world in a failed attempt at mosquito control. Now they are considered a pest in many countries including Australia. I live in upstate new york though so we don't have them readily available. A pest in one place is a cherished pet in others.

I understand that they are quite preditory - and will eat other small fish (eg fry)

I think out mystry guppy is one and our snails hate it (they have taken to moving about with their antenne curled up so it dosnt eat them!

yea i have quite a few at my house and pond. They have them at the LFS but mine are from a wash about 4 hours away. :D

Mine seem to be wild as they have no idea what flake food is. I have no idea how to convert them to eating flakes! Anyone have any ideas? they are quite skittish at this point.

Try live blood worms(mosquito larvae) or freeze dried blood worms. That is what they usually eat in the wild. They are mainly carnivores. Hope this helps!
