So the general premise is that I'm about to begin preparing my new (second-hand) tank. I'm hoping to create a planted tank and rather than using sand as a substrate, I'd quite like to try a clay based substrate (as suggested in an earlier thread topic by other users). I quite liked the idea of akadama bonsai soil, but haven't found a particularly cheap supplier. I did however spot this stuff (LINK), which is certainly cheap. Although I realise it's unlikely that anyone will have used this particular soil as a substrate, what do people think as to its suitability for an aquarium?
