I concur with everything that LoveMyOscar said about keeping an Oscar, but would also recommend with the hood that velcro closings be added or a canopy that doesn't allow the tank lid to be opened fully when you're not there to hold it open. I had two 11-12 inch oscars that were raised together only to get up one morning to find my precious Tiger out of the tank. He managed to jump and hit the lid of the tank hard enough to flop himself out and die. Out of all the fish disasters we've had throughout our 9 years of fishkeeping, this was the first time I actually sat down and cried. I sure do miss him. He used to wag his hind end when I walked by the tank so that I'd feed him and he'd eat right out of my hand without nipping at me, unlike my remaining O who doesn't seem to like anyone. I don't need a beware of dog sign, I need a beware of the Oscar sign as he attacks anything that gets near his tank.
Seriously, though, they are very interactive fish, a lot of work, but the rewards outweigh everything else.
