Hi,

You may have read my last post about my Swordtail giving birth a week ago. Then I counted about 15-20 and I thought I would leave them all as I felt that some may die, some I could keep in the 84 litre tank and some in the main tank.

However, in the last couple of days I have counted upto 50 fry now. Don't know where they were hiding. It's amazing really how they just seem to spring up from hiding places. I am never going to be able to keep this many.

Are you going to tell me that I have to be cruel to be kind and put some in the main tank to be eaten now or will some die off (I doubt it as they seem to all be doing excellent on my brine shrimp) ? Or the other option is - should I wait a month and try to have some picked up by local fish club members ? I checked with the local fish shops and they will not take any because of the risk of disease.

Many thanks,

Rob

Oh by the way - does anyone know any clubs in Farnham, Surrey UK or near ? Also, If you live near me and want some swordtail fry you're more than welcome. The parents are amongst the healthiest Swordtails I have yet seen in all the shops I've looked in in the last 15 months.

I take it by "Clubs" you mean Aquarists Societies, they are few and far between nowdays compared to back in the 80's/90's (blame probably lies with computers, playstations, and the likes of, the younger generation have other things to do thesedays)
Anyway there used to be Mid Sussex A.S. but I think they've gone now. I think the only one left now is Reigate & Redhill A.S. (might be some travelling involved though)

Hope this is of some help...

I have around 200 Swordtail fry ranging from 1cm up to 3cm in a 54 liter tank and a flying fox in there as well and they are doing fine. You may need to do more frequent gravel vacs and partial water changes but untill they get a bit larger they should be fine. I find it strange that the local stores will not buy them when they get over 3-4cm since all the stores here say they prefer to buy locally bred fish. I am going to deliver about 15-20 of the larger ones to one of my LFS tomorrow. The problem is that if you have a lot in the same tank they develop more slowly. HTH

i know this might seem unfair but if you have more than you can handle you can always give them to your local pet store or you can use them as food for your other fish i know you might not do this but it will be easy to get rid of them sorry if i put it to harsh just trying to help. :dunno:
