I'm seriously debating breaking the law. I'm sitting here staring at the tank of someone I know, the friend of my brother, and all that jazz, and I look at the fish that are left in this tank (well, not really, because you can't see past all the green growing along the sides....) and wondering if I should steal one in the effort to save it from a starved lonely existence. If you need the full details I posted a topic about tetras and guppies in cyprids (yeah, I know, I can't spell that word :*) )

Subject:

Lone albino cory who often does not get fed, lives without any other cories. Often doesn't move unless it smells food. Goes insane when it does.

Tank:

Is not cleaned. Ever. They top the water off, completely replace the filter cartridge whenever. God only knows what is in the gravel, as it's never syphoned. Rest of the fish are in hiding around the clock unless you feed them. Have you ever seen sharks in a feeding frenzy? Replace with tetras of three types, five fish total.

So. I feel bad. I tried to tell them about how to take care of the tank, without being pushy, and nothing works. Now they are talking about the tank being boring, and they want to get more colorful fish. I think the betta in the vase they have is enough color. Yet here I am wanting to steal their fish. And it would be stealing, they own them, not me. And yet... I feel obligated to at least try and give the fish a decent life. I'm going to drop the hint about if they want to get rid of the fish I'd be glad to take them off their hands, even though I couldn't give them decent schools for a while at least they'd be fed and have good water. But I think they'll want to stick it through, and the fish will just exist till they die, and then they'll get more fish. So should I just nick one or two (or three....) in the hopes of giving them lives? If this was a dog or cat being kept like this I would, as they can 'run away' or be taken by law enforcement or whatnot, but fish aren't looked at like that, I can't call anyone, they can only die, and I don't want them to catch on that maybe it didn't 'die' and actually left with me.

This is a realy dodgey area of fish keeping...
a. If you stole the fish, they would most likey know you did it by putting 2 and 2 together.
b. The fish sound like they have been leaving in a terible state...
Have you tried asking to take their fish off their hands straight?

To the kid I did, to the mom, sorta yeah. Her attitude seems to be more 'oh well', whihc is why I'm am going to try again tonight. The tank is worse than ever, and since I only come here maybe once a month I'm worried that the next time I come over more will be missing and the tank will be even nastier. Nobody seems to know what all is still alive in there except for me. I'm even thinking that perhaps I could offer to take care of the fish while they clean out the tank, and then hope they just don't bother and decide to let me keep them. Like I said, I feel like an ass either way, because if I don't do something the fish die but if I do then I stole from people I know. :dunno:

Who ever said the world was black and white obviously wasn't in it for very long.

Sounds like you could steal the fish and they'd just assume that it died and the others ate it. Sad as it is though, that's probably not a good idea and it really doesn't solve the underlying problem; inept fish keeping which means when these fish die, they'll probably just move on to new fish.

Well, if casually offering to take these now "boring" fish off their hands doesn't work, offer to buy the tank and fish. Maybe the idea of just getting rid of the fish entirely, and getting some money in exchange, would appeal to them... Though really, they might not miss the cory if it happened to slip out of the tank and into a bag of water and then slipped totally by accident into one of your tanks.......... ;)

The best thing to do is to feel around like you have with the idea of taking them off their hands. Don't seem too anxious to get them. Be nonchalant about it. If they don't go for it then save them (do not call it stealing because its not).

As for "feeling" like and "being" a criminal lets not be too hasty to judge. Criminal is a subjective term. What makes one a criminal? Usually the answer is when one breaks the laws of society. However, as we all know, society is not always right and laws are merely attempts by those in power to keep order and keep their subjects under wraps, they are by no means a code of moral conduct that everyone should obey.

To save these fish by dubiuosly taking them would not be an immoral or wrong act. Yes it would be contrary to a law created by your governing body but your actions are right and thus the law has no bearing.

If anyone should not agree with my oppinions feel free to not be offended by it. I'm simply trying to clear up a moral issue that is subdued by fear of what government and law has deamed "right and just."

Is imprisoning a living being and torturing them till they die a right and just act? I think not. However saving those being from torture and certain death IS. The word "Criminal" is an empty word that is given a negative connotative meaning by society in order to dissuade conformists from breaking the "rules." To call yourself a criminal for saving the fish would be a betrayal of your self.

I've already told them about cleaning the filter out and replacing it while still keeping the good bacteria in, told them about why they hide all the time, explained that they need to feed them more often, that the cory doesn't eat the algae off the walls, cleaning the gravel, changing the water.... I've already offered to clean the tank. I'm at my wits end.

As to the stealing of fish, it's the fact that other than this I like these people. If the were strangers I'd already had many fishnappings to my credit. As it is... but still, yeah. They treat their fish like the crap the things swim around in.

Yet if I ask about keeping the fish while they clean the tank, and they say no, they might get really suspicious if one suddenly 'dies'.

I'll just ask her tonight, see whats up, go from there. Right now I have to keep this kid from putting his cat on the treadmill.....

From how you described this tank, I bet you could secretly bag the fish, and no one would be any wiser. Just leave them feeding their pea soup water. By the time they realize the fish is gone, they will think it just died and has decomposed.

Go to your local ill-maintained fish shop and grab some dead fish to replace the living ones when you steal them... no one will ever know
