I bought a lovely picece of 12" Mopani wood a week ago, I soked it in hot water for 24 hours and removed most of the tanins, but I've noticed a slimmy film covering the wood, does anyone know if this is normal ? will it affect the water or the fish. ? It doesn't look very nice either.

just give it a scrub mate.. even though you've soaked it you will still notice tanins being released for a long while.. maybe months but the initial soak does take a good deal of the tanins out so is still well worth doing.

It is likely that slime will develop into a white fungus. This looks terrible and smells funny, but it will not harm the fish, and it will stop growing after a few weeks or couple of months.

Not too expensive, £9. Bought it because it looked really nice and I read somewhere Mopani wood was ok for a fish tank.!
